WD My Book Studio WDBC3G0020HAL - Usable as boot drive via Firewire?

Hello,

 

Ca the WD My Book Studio WDBC3G0020HAL 2TB external had drive be used as a boot drive via Firewire? I have read on several website that this is only working sometimes and find it hard to believe. Is it possibly necessary or good to reformat the drive first (to get rid of all the stuff that WD has put on it)? I have an Intel i5 iMac with OS X 10.7.4 and would like to partition this drive and use one partition as bootable backup drive.

Most of the WD externals are not bootable.
