Switch from Backup to Synch on My Book Elite

I have a 1 TB My Book Elite external drive that I've been using for backup with WD Smartware.  The external drive is now full, but the size of source drive  is well below 1 TB.  I guess this is because I've deleted files on the source drive but they're still on the external drive.  I'd like to switch to synch from bakcup to eliminate this problem but don't know how to eliminate all the files on the external drive so I can start over.  Any suggestions on how I can make this switch?  Thanks.

Do you have all of they files on another drive? Smartware doesn't backup all file types either. I would simply reformat the drive and start out clean. Reformatting will wipe out all of the old files. This might help http://wdc.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/wdc.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=3865

Thanks for the response.  I do have all the data backup up on another drive.  I'll do the reformatting and come back to you if that raises any new questions.
