Please advise: where's the music on my My Book drive?

[ Edited ]

Because the network interface on my My Book Live 3TB failed, I had to take out the HDD of the My Book in order to recover my music collection. I so far have succesfully connected the drive on a USB port but when I browse the directories with a Linux reader I cannot seem to find my music. I find all sorts of system files and what not on the drive, but not my own files.

Does anyone know how to get to them? I am running Windows 7 and am using Diskinternals Linux Reader to browse the My Book HDD.

I would greatly appreciate any help on this. Thanks!

Take a look at '/DataVolume/shares/Public/Shared Pictures'

Thnx Jim!

Alas there is no such folder showing up on the drive. All there seem to be are system files. The shared folders all seem to be empty somehow. Do you perhaps know why that is?

Slowly he turns, wiping the remaining dripping egg from his chin ...

You of course were looking for 'music' and I told you to look at 'pictures'.

If indeed the drive still contains the shared items file structure, you should find the user data in /shares, unless a factory restore was run (this erases user data).

l /shares
total 320
drwxr-xr-- 2 root root 65536 Apr 13 16:51 .mediacrawler
drwxrwxr-x 7 root share 65536 Apr 8 14:56 Public
drwxrwxr-x 2 root share 65536 Apr 3 16:07 admin1
drwxrwxr-x 13 root share 65536 Apr 7 15:34 user1
drwxrwxr-x 13 root share 65536 Mar 28 17:42 user2

If you put the music in the Public folder, it should be under '/shares/Public/Shared Music'.

If you put it in a user folder, look under that user name under /shares.

If you are seeing just system files, you are probably looking at  /shares/Public/Software.

-rwxrwxrwx 1 daapd share 66 Aug 23 2010 autorun.inf

Hopefully, you'll be able to find all of your user data.

BTW -- /Data/Volume/shares and /shares point to the same area via a link (at least in the native linux on the NAS).

Good luck.:smileyhappy:
