I think that almost everyone would like to be able to set the maximum size for each share, here are a few examples...
1. Parents want unlimited share size(s), but for each of their kids they wish to limit the share size for each of them so that it doesn't get spammed with stuff that doesn't need to be there. I know a few parents would be very happy if their children's homework etc was stored on the HD rather than just their computer as a back up.
2. Freaks like me will want to set specific share sizes just to allow us to keep things organized and up together.
3. A lot of people have Macs and currently the timemachine will use up the entire drive, it is one heck of a hogger. Since Apple have yet to fix this, and may never do...this may be great for users so they can set a limit on their timemachine share.
I can think of loads of reasons why this would be a great feature, and to be honest it is the only feature (or rather lack of) which is preventing me from buying myself one; though I know a lot of people who already own one or more of these, and therefore I am very interested in at least one for myself.
PS: It may be an idea to also allow some shared "No Limit", thus can use whatever free/usable space is remaining, but those with limits can only use up to the limit(s) set.
PPS: Might also be worth concidering whether or not to have share limits per user as well as per share. This could be a max limit for a user regardless of which shared they are using, or it could be a max limit for them within a specific share.
I think at the end of the day, I could be happy to create a share for each person and set a limit on those shares, leaving mine with 'No Limit'.
Many thanks,
Shane
WD please upgrade your firmware on your Network Drives to include the FREE ! Upgrade offered by Twonky for version 5 users to use version 6 for FREE !
Other NAS suppliers such as QNAP did this a couple of years ago (see link)
http://forum.qnap.com/viewtopic.php?f=213&t=38026
This seems to be a Hot topic for allot of WD NAS owners and we are not getting any reasonable answers out of WD.
I notice the WD team put this Twonky upgrade idea straight to Unplanned status so no one can add further comments or give Kudos.
WD need to provide a full explanation on why we can't have the free Twonky upgrade when other NAS suppliers can supply it?
WDTony please don't change this to unplanned and please provide us with a real answer on where the Media Server software is headed for the current WD NAS products.
Thanks for listening.
Being able to mail a File & Folder Link from the WD2go app without the WD2go app installed on the recievers side.
A link generated that the receiver can click to access directly for stream or download in a web-browser as simple as Dropbox.
Today the share will only result in a broken confusing, disappointing & non-working link in the recievers web-browser making this function in WD2go app with such a potential totally unusable.
The storage setup on the N750 (and other N series routers) needs an option to have a read/write user and to also allow other users to read only. Something like:
Storage access permission:
_ Public Share
√ User Account
Username: SomeUser
Password: MyPassword
√ Allow public read only access
-or-
Storage access permission:
Everyone:
√ Read
√ Write
User Account (read/write):
Username: SomeUser
Password: MyPassword
Sharespace : Please provide a tool to recover files from a broken Sharespace RAID-5
Status:

Dear Sharespace-team,
after reading through this forum, it seems as if the Sharespace RAID-5 is really touchy and not very reliable. So I would like you to create a thorough help page on data recovery from crashed RAID-5 array.
I assume there must be a software tool that can be used to recover the data of a crashed sharespace raid-5 array, right?
Many users have access to a "regular" PC and could hook up the 4 drives to it, boot it from a DVD and operate a data recovery tool.
So please provide the software tools (may be the image of a self-bootable DVD with linux and the preconfigured software tool) as well as detailed instructions.
This would enable your users to help themselves so they don't have to contact your support which - in return - would lower your support cost. So providing this software and information would be a win-win.
Thank you
Sincerely
Matt
I know that twonky media has been updated to 6.0 was hoping to get a firmware update for the mybook world to incorporate this as twonky are saying the upgrade is free for 5.x users?
Thanks!
In the WD Quick View the shut down of the My Book Live is really easy and I use this a lot for energy saving reasons when I not using the NAS. But it is not possible to start the NAS so easily. To start the My Book Live you have to reconnect the power connector, because the My Book Live does not support WOL.
So please support WOL to boot the device when it is needed and if possible implement it also into the WD Quick View
You can also going further by doing a automatic shutdown when all Computer with WD Quick View are powered off and do a automatic startup when the first computer with the WD Quick View is starting. This will by a major step in the energy saving of your device.
Because nobody need a NAS when all Computer are power off especially in the private sector for what the My Book Live is designed.
I am not sure what mediacrawler does (I think it is indexing files for use by the remote access tools), but it's killing the CPU on the MyBook Live and severely degrades file I/O performance.
I started noticing that TimeMachine backups were never completing - even with very small changes to my local HDD. Time Machine would sit forever trying to complete a 60MB (yeah, MEGAbyte) backup. And this is running Gb ethernet between the MacBook and the WD MyBookLive (i.e. not wireless). When I stopped Time Machine, I noticed that the HDD activity light on the MyBook Live would keep flicker forever.
So... I SSH'd into the box and ran 'top'. Lo and behold, mediacrawler is using a huge amount of CPU and never stops running. Sometimes it would help things to reboot the system - for a while - but eventually the drive gets back into the same state. I removed the executable bit from the file's permissions (/usr/local/mediacrawler/mediacrawlerd) and restarted the MyBook Live. The system runs much faster. I will run some performance timings, at some point, but you folks have a problem with mediacrawler and system performance that needs investigation.
Thanks, Ken
Just a dumb NAS option....
Status: NewI appreciate the market place and how adding advanced features to NAS devices is the "norm". However some of us just need a dumb simple reliable NAS device. So instead of going through each feature and asking to have individual features turned off or on, it would be easier and certainly simplier for end users if we had an option that said...
Check here to have device be simple NAS storage device.
Checking the box turns off all the nice and fancy features and lets the NAS device be just that. A networked hard drive for storage space that clients can access as setup in user/shares sections.
Fancy is cool and all. I can assure you there is a market for simple NAS storage. Does not seem like it would be that hard to have both in one product. If you want fancy, you don't check the box. If you want simple, you check the box.
I think no one is asking for real time transcoding on the cpu of wd's NAS: we need just a reliable solution that works with all current file containers (mkv, avi, mp4) and possibly with most common DLNA receivers (Xbox, playstation, some new tv set)
Hello All,
I have an idea for the My Book Live Duo software.
As we all know, if we want to enable web access to our devices, we have to login to the device from home and then add access, which goes through the WD servers.I think this setup is bad for the following reasons.
1) What if let's say WD goes out of business next year. How am I supposed to access my NAS?
2) The WD site is constantly giving me errors when I login to My Book from a remote PC Browser.
HTTP Status 404 - TCP relay failed - address for target domain not found
type Status report
message TCP relay failed - address for target domain not found
description The requested resource (TCP relay failed - address for target domain not found) is not available.
Now, I know it's not my router doing this because 1) if I refresh the page, sometimes the site will load My Book properly, and sometimes it'll give me the same error and 2) I've configured port forwarding with other devices in the past without issue. The software for my iPhone also fails to load my drive more times than not.
I really like this product, but I'm starting to get aggitated over this issue. I hope someone here can either provide a fix or implement this idea in the near future because this product is coming real close to getting shipped back to new egg.

While a NAS-Box is a neat idea for storing important files, it is still necessary to perform a regular backup.
Doing so by using an external hard drive can be cumbersome - so most users actually don't do it.
However, in recent years and months, more and more "Online Space providers" appear on the market and offer cloud storage services that would be a PERFECT match for any NAS-system if the NAS was capable of keeping certain directories in sync with the cloud.
Some online storage providers in Europe are actually selling packages like that: buy 1 TB of online storage for 10 EUR per month + get a Synology NAS for 50 EUR on top which is set to automatically keep itself in sync with the online drive.
Advantages:
* Access all files with full speed while being connected to the LAN
* Never worry about a backup - it is constantly taken care of by the NAS
* Fire-proof backup concept: even if your house burns down or thieves steal all IT hardware, your data is still safe in the cloud.
* Access all backed up files through the internet
* Always keep online storage and NAS in sync
* Keep several locations in sync: 1 NAS for each local office + 1 online storage tank = everyone works with the same files.
I would like to propose that the WD NAS boxes should be equipped with a software that
* lets the user enter the access information for such online storage providers
* lets the user choose which shares should be kept in sync with the cloud
* lets the user choose whether or not the synchronized files will be encrypted
* keeps the selected shares in sync with the cloud service
Thank you
Matt
We have two NAS devices (4 TB and 8 TB, both Raid 5) for storing data in our installation. Each device is in a separate distant location from the other and in different networks.
The second NAS serves as a backup device for the first one. We have devised a way to automate the backup process but we would be much happier if you could please consider including support for NAS to NAS backup.
Best Regards,
John
It would be perfect to have ability to set maximum partition size on MyBook Live, so that Time Machine won't fill up an entire network disk.
Hello,
This is more of a feature request than a problem. I have recently enabled IPv6 on my network and would like to enable IPv6 on my NAS, and I realize that there are no configuration options to do this right now. Even if it just was a stateless configuration client, and I was unable to manually set the IPv6 address, I would be happy.
Samba has fully supported supported IPv6 since v3.2 (link here.)
For those of you more curious about IPv6, and how to get it on your home router or PC, please visit http://www.tunnelbroker.net/ for free IPv6 connectivity. Visit their forums for help with setting it up.
Also this is a wiki page about IPv6: http://ipv6wiki.net/wiki/Main_Page
Thanks very much!
The TwonkyMedia sever (v.5.1) built in to the My Book World Edition NAS drive is not allowing media streaming with a number of DNLA enabled devices. The server software sees the devices are renderers, but the devices cannot see files on the NAS drive. This is a 'feature' of v.5.1 of the server software, which is fixed in later releases of the server software (checked by downloading trial versions of the server software on my PC, and using it to share the NAS files). Without an urgent update (current version is 6.0), the ability of the My Book to act as an effective DNLA media streaming device is impaired for a number of users (though it will work with some equipment).
The My Book Live allows to share via web access (so that you can share files with others), but the Public share is always accessible when sharing. I propose to add functionality so that I can share only a provate part of the My Book Live, and NOT the Public party.
The problem is that the Public share is the only share that the WD Photos app can look at, so if I use this app, all photos need to be in the Public folder. But when sharing, I do not want everybody to have access to the Puyblic folder.
Another option therefore would be to add functionality in the WD photos app so that the app can access other (private) shares on the drive.
