2TB USB 2.0 FREEAGENT EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE CLICKING THEN STOPS

When I start up the power, with or without the usb cable connected, the drive spins up, then gets quiet a split second then makes about 12 clicks in a row  which sound kinda like an alien zapping something with a laser, but is probably some kind of test the drive is doing? Anyway, nothing happens after that and the drive is not seen by my laptop which is connected. I don't know if the two are related, someone pls advise if I have to just throw this drive away or if there will ever be any way to get my data off it.

It has been dropped from about 4 or 5 feet off the ground at some point in its life and there is a rattling noise inside when shaken, but it had worked after that so I can't be sure the fall is related to the current problems. I have not used it in months, but always had hoped I could get the data off it at some point, only to try today to do that and been disappointed with it not being recognized.

Well since you dropped it it's probably physically damaged.  Freeagent is not a WD product anyway.

Even though it is clicking, it is still possible to get the data.
