HD very very slow [WD Elements Portable SE 1TB]

Hi,

I have a WD Elements Portable SE 1TB, I bought it about six months ago and worked very well. I used it in three computers: a WIN XP, a WIN Vista and a WIN 7.

This last two weeks started working badly, taking long time to be mounted and unmounted, taking some minutes to open a picture, and so on. I thought it was dying so I copied the vital information to the Vista computer. It took about 36hs to copy the 4GB I really wanted to keep.

I cannot use this disk like this, and I don't want to format it yet (I still have about 850GB of information that is not vital but I want to conserve). What could I do to solve this problem?

PS: As I write this I'm trying to CHKDSK /R it, but I don't expect that to be completed before Monday...

Hello,

Did you check the USB cable? Also how about testing the drive using a different computer ? Please do so and let me know the results.

I did check the drive with several computers, no luck. And about the cable, I'll try to get another and see what happens.

Did u manage to solve your problem. i'm facing a similar situation and m clueless as to what i should be doing about it. I spent nearly 7 days backing up all the data onto another drive. Can the drive be fixed or should it be replaced. Please advise.. awaiting ur reply. Thanks a lot.
