My WD external worked for a while but now dosn't get rocognized?

I've had my WD for a couple months now and it's worked just fine. It's drivers installed fine on my windows computers. But the other day I pluged it in and started going thorough my files when it just stopped working (it was like I dissconnected it but I hadn't). So I unplugged it then plugged it back in and it installed a new device driver for it. Now my computer knows something is plugged in but it won't let my explore it.

I used Disk Managment to see if that would find it but it didn't. Now i don't know what to do. Can some one please help me?

Sorry to say this, but I think your disk is broken…

Yesterday I bought a 2TB WD Elements USB 2.0 and started working with it. (moved 160GB of data to it).

Today I registered as a WD customer. Barely had passed 24h and the Win XP stopped recognizing it (a few hours ago).

Already made a few software tests, and confirmed that the HD as gone! All my important data gone! The disk never left the original place I put it on.

For my surprise, after searching a little on the web, I realized that some people had the same problem.

I thought that I could trust WD HD’s but I was wrong... I won’t replace for another one: I’ll get my money back (unless the store recover my data – I don’t believe they will)! And I’ll never buy WD HD’s again. Where’s the quality control?

Shame on me for believe in WD :smileysad:

It would be nice to have someone from WD responding to this, but I don't believe...

First try plug ginginto a different receptacle instead of a power strip. Also try turning plug 180 deg in receptacle. Also try moving USB plug to back port on PC and don't use a hub. If that doesn't work try calling customer service if they think the power supply is bad they'll probably send you another to try. Remember never trust important data to just one drive internal or external no matter who makes it.

The disk spins and de HD appears on the system properties devices. The power plug is working well.

I usually don't trust important data on just one storage device, but come on, I was only rearranging my data. It was supposed that the disk would function at least 24 hours… It didn’t.

[ Edited ]

My Western Digital 1tb Element has stopped responding about 45min ago, was attempting to find a solution online.

Got sooooo fed up with ths mess and decided to register/join forum.   Seems I'm part of an already growing crowd.

What the heck is this mess?!

And I bought this last week from microcenter.

Before the external stopped responding, it was SLOOOOWWWWWWW to access,.  Than just stopped responding altoghether.

Currently once I plug in the power cord than the usb to my computer-it will just start blinking att a steady rythm and sit there.

the disk is spinning and theres no audible clicks/scraps.

Was going to take this overseas with me....

Re: My WD external worked for a while but now dosn't get rocognized?

after a bit of browsing online for a few hours.. i decided to take it apart.

was tinkering around with it and trying to duplicate the same result-as in every so often i would get the diode to blink rapidly as if it was on.

so with the power cord and USB plugged in, i pulled it off the harddrive.  it still does the same thing.

even  if i duplicated the usual steady blinking diode  i just pull it off the harddrive, it stays like that.

could the USB board be the problem? I mean you can literally hear the harddirve start spinning and stay there at a decent rate.

I too have a similar problem. The drive does not vibrate though the LED comes on. It appears dead and I fear the worst for all my data on it. Will update if I hear anything from WD. I cannot believe WD is not aware of this problem

Check Disk Management to see if the drive shows up there.  If it does, then you may either have corrupted the partition, somehow, or you may not be getting enough power for it to be recognized by Explorer (Computer).
