The same with me! I have changed to FAT32 my WD and nothing.

Today i read that the files video, music, photo and game have to be with CAPITAL letters...

I will try that and i 'll let you know if it works!

Sorry but my PS3 does not work with WD My Passport Essential 500 GB and this is the replay I got from the Polish PS3 support!!!!

So please do not make users believe that changing format to FAT32 it will work!!!

I return mine and took a USB 2.0 Freecom which works!

First of all Hello! This is my first post in this community! I apologize for  some spellingmisstakes I might make because English is not my native language. I am Swedish...

I had an issue with this too and I may have a solution but It's more likely to succseed if there are a whole bunch of people wanting to add support for the drives!

Ok so here goes:

The problem with PS3 not recognizing the WD MyPassport Essential USB 3.0 / 2.0 has nothing to do with the drive itself except perhaps being too new But when Sony released the softwareupdate 3.50 for PS3 they didn´t want their product to be compatible with unlicenced thirdparty handcontrollers and stuff. But they removed the support for a bit more things (I think it was unintentionally) like this new WD harddiskdrive. But I hope they will add support for it in the next softwareupdate if the owners of this drive let Sony know that the drive is not compatible with PS3 yet!

So I sent an email to the Swedsh PlayStation Support explaining the problem and that I want them to forward the message to the appropriate people... Please if you own one of these drives send an email to or call the PlayStation Support and ask them to fix this in the next softwareupdate!

BOTTOM LINE if you have a PS3 system that has an older version than 3.50 your drive should work. When I tried returning my drive to the store they could not see any errors on the drive because their PS3 had an older version and it was not connected to the Internet.The drive popped up in their XMB like any other FAT32 USB-drive would.

I have version 3.55 right now because I want to play games online with my PS3 slim. And you cant revert back to an older version without chipping the PS3 and so on.

Wait for the next update or get a new drive... But please send the email!

My PS3 Slim is with 3.41 firmware (After a downgrade) and my Essential is still not working with it.

I've got a 1TB version, this does not work on a PS3 slim as people have said. But, I still have an old 60GB PS3, and it works just fine on this model. They are both running firmware 3.55, it just fails to work on the new Slim model. I phoned Sony's support, and they are bloody useless, trying to convince me that the PS3 won't detect the harddrive because a backup on the harddrive was not completed successfully... bollocks!

Hey! I just noticed that the usb 3.0 WD HDDs has an issue with ps3 slim , because I'm using my WD 3.0 1tb Hdd on my  ps3 Fat and it's working fine , I just tried to plug it to my ps3 slim and did not work.

any way I found a very easy solution (tested by my) and it's working 100%

you just need to plug a usb hub into your ps3 slim then plug you hard drive in the hub!

try it and tell me the result

Hi,

I have a WD My Book Essential 1TB 3.0, to let the PS3 see it I performed:

1) Update Harde Disk FW

2) Format HD in FAT32 with "Fat32Formatter"

3) Connected to PS3 via a USB 2.0 HUB with 5V external power

Results:

PS3 can see correctly the drive and i can manage file on it, but the proble is that the file trnasfer speed is hugely decreased!!!

It's more or less 100Kbit/sec!!!

Do you think is a USB HUB issue???

Is your drive formatted FAT32 LOGICAL ?
