True size - misleading

Just bought 2.5 TB elements external harddrive .......................  answer me this why is there only 2.27 TB available space .....  230 gb for the drivers ? that would be incredibly bad engineering wouldn't it? I can only reach the conclusion that harddrive manufacturers [universally] think that it is ok to put misleading information on their products. No where does it say how much true space is available, why not? Is it acceptable ....... well I say no and I'm sick of it ! What other product would we buy that tell us that  we are recieving a certain quanity and only recieving 82% of what we have purchased? Would we accept it with any other product ?

Simple solution put the correct available space on the packaging/literature so the customer can make a value judgement.

Re: True size - misleading

It's the way Windows allocates space nothing to do with the drive makers. Google it if you want the long boring explanation.

Re: True size - misleading

Honestly, Joe summed it up nicely.  All drives regardless of make and model do this.  In technicallity, a *byte is really 1024..  However, the comptuer reads a *byte @ 1000 (because of the metric system).  So this will make it look smaller That is all.

Re: True size - misleading

To explain better that issue I will like to post this KB link

Drive displays a smaller capacity than the indicated size on the drive label
