WD 1TB Element worked on day, empty the next day.

I have been scanning and saving pictures to the ext drive. 2days ago I moved about 30 more jpgs from a flash drive, shut down the PC which I do nightly, Yesterday turned on the PC, it recognizes the drive on K drive, but says its empty and that I need to format it in order to use it.  What could have happened? Can I recovery the pictures that were on it?

Data corruption my friend.......

 

You can use Recuva or Photorec to recover the info, however that's not a 100% sure.....

 

Then you will need to reformat your drive in order to make the unit fully operational again...

Not surprised to read data corruption, just mistified as to why or how. Anyway, thank you for the options. They both look rather daunting to use. WD suggested some others that I will look into.
