WD Elements Desktop 1.5 not recognized

Somehow I have lost the folder on my C drive - whether an err or a pirate. I have over 220 GBs of personal work docs, pics, letters, etc.  but that may not be the problem. After a full shut down, the drive did not open and states to format it.

I checked Disk Management and Device Manager to no avail.  While running my CPU was running off and on as if the drive was trying to connect.  I shut down and unplugged the device.

Before that, I loaded SES but the driver did not install; the dialogue window stated that I have the best driver. I then loaded Data LifeGuard and ran the quick test. The results passed in every category.  I have also run diagnostics from my PC Support but at the Read Test, after the third try, shuts down the test.

I need to locate the files. I loaded the installation files but only an .exe shows - and that means formatting which would erase the disk. And I had an error in Problems and Solutions for install or some other program throwing out the System 32 driver.

Is there another path to opening it?

If the problem is my USB, what suggestions do you have?

If it is a power situation - the install notes state to plug the USB prior to electric.  Can I reverse this to elec than USB?

Where can I find the files I need - that is, instead of running install which would erase all data, simply load and plug it in again.

What else could it be? I have thought about a USB power hub or a small server to plug it into - is that a solution?

Drive could have gotten corrupted by a virus or damaged files

You can use TestDisk or other recovery software to retrieve the data

Re: WD Elements Desktop 1.5 not recognized

Wizen - thanks for the info, I am in the process of doing that - by that I mean, shortly after your message, the drive was not even listed. I let it run all day while I was out and there it was when I got back. But it still says format the drive. My first inclination is to let it run for another period of time and go into the TestDisk recovery file to see if that is what I need to open it. Again thanks if you have any more solutions please post them. wwhite
