Western Digital Elements 2TB not being detected

I recently bought two Western Digital Elements 2TB hard drives.  Model # WDBAAU0020HBK-NESN.  I connected them to my computer, but only one of them is being detected.  I tried the hard drive in my laptop which detects the hard drive fine.  Also, when I plug the hard drive in and out, my computer plays the sound that tells me that a device was plugged in and out.  So I know it's being detected to some extent, but the drive doesn't show up as one I can use.  There's no trace of it that I can find.  Any advice?

Re: Western Digital Elements 2TB not being detected

As an update, I've found that if I disconnect the hard drive that was working, and then plug in the one that wasn't being detected, that the drive can then be detected.  However, then the computer doesn't detect the other one.  So they both seem to be working, but it's detecting both of them at the same time.

Interesting.

Try renaming any one of the drives to something else & see if the problem persists.

Connect any one of the drives to the PC.

Once proprly recognized, goto My Computer, click on the connected drive name & press F2 and type in the new name.

Once done, connect the 2nd drive and see if the computer now shows the two drives correctly.

There was a post on this a while ago I think it was in the MY Book section.

Go to Disk Management and either assign a letter to the one that's not showing up, or reformat it.  Both should work.

You don't see the drive in Disk Management?

  1. Try connecting the power adapter directly to the wall outlet.
  2. Try another pc.
  3. Try another cable.
