brand new 3 tb drive not recognized by computer

I have a brand new 3 tb wd elements drive but it is not recognized by my computer.  WIth other external drives, it shows up on computer under devices with removable storage.  Do I need to return and exchange it for a lower tb drive?  Or can I "map" it or something to get the computer to see it?  My laptop is a few years old and I'm running Windows 7.

This drive can not be mapped

 

 

if Windows 7 64bit ok 32bit no go

 

 go to disk management and see if able to format the drive

 

chose GPT as the partition style
