Another cloning failure, help

I am attempting to clone my Dell Inspiron laptop HD, it's only 98 GB, and has 2 GB free space. I've used WD Acronis with the source HD in the laptop, and the new WD3200 drive in an enclosure connected via USB. Doesn't clone, so I made a backup of the original HD using Acronis with the original drive and the new drive in USB enclosures, placing the backup copy of the source drive on free HD space on my desktop, and having both drives connected to the desktop system via USB carriers.

The drives are recognized and the cloning starts but fails after a few minutes, due to this error:

<event code="500" id="22" level="2" message="Failed to write data to the disk.
Failed to write to sector '2,790,419' of hard disk '5'.
Failed to write the snapshot manager drive. (0x1000DA)
The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error (0xFFF0): ⎂Retry/⎂Ignore/Ignore ⎂All/⎂Cancel: User response: ⎂Cancel" module="1" time="1335620042" />

I have checked the target drive with WD data lifeguard and everything looks fine. The source drive is a Fujitsu.

Any ideas on why this is occurring?

Thanks!

I know that Acronis works best when both hard drives are connected directly to the computer motherboard.
