WD6400BEVT: FAT problem? Lost files and directory

[ Edited ]

Good morning,

I own 2 of this hard disks: Western Digital 640GB 2,5” – WD6400BEVT.

I have the same problem on both of them. They seem to loose any infos about files and direcotries after some time of usage.

I try to better explain. Before starting, I zerofilled both of this units with the utility provided from Western Digital, connected them to a PC, formatted and started using them as a backup storage. I copied on them some files and directories.

But after a variable amount of time (some times after some hours, some times after days), both the units become not stable, Windows does not recognize files and directories I previously copied on the units, and in the end they become not stable and not usable.

I tried to re-format them under Windows, but the problem come again and again.

I tested them on different PCs, but always the same problem. The units are not under warranty, but I would assume they have got no mechanical or electrical problems: it seems to me a logical problem / fault.

May be I would need to update their firmware? How?

Are there any actions I could do before dismissing my two units?

Hoping in a quick answer from you.

Thanks.

It seems the same thing to me, too. But the strange thing is that I was able to zero-fill them without problems. ... And problem came again :-\

Any further ideas?
