"Copy manager" copying problems

[ Edited ]

I connected a USB HDD to my NAS and used the copymanager to copy files.

I copied many 8GB+ files the the USB drive and let it run for a night.

During the morning when the copying was done, I discovered that the manager ended with an error and all files are 4GB in size.

Only later I was given a hint that the USB HDD partition is FAT32 and the copying was a waste of time.

A question to Bill and anybody on the WD team: wouldn't it be better is the manager checked the partition type or if file sizes match the partition?

Thanks,

Jacob

Re: "Copy manager" copying problems

Be careful, I did a copy manager from WD to USB, gave me the message that it was complete.  When I disconnect the USB drive and attach to a PC XP and windows 7, I get a drive error.  Unbelieveable, this WD mybook is a piece of crap for real file management.  I still don't understand why they didn't put a USB connection from WD to PC.

Did you safely remove the USB drive from the MyBook or power off the MyBook prior to disconnecting the USB drive from the MyBook?  If not, that would explain why you had an error with Windows recognizing your USB drive.

That was problably it.  But the issue there is people will disconnect without doing that just like a PC.   To me that's a serious design flaw.

BTW, I'm assuming there is no way to recover from that ?

Re: "Copy manager" copying problems

Disconnecting from the drive without safely removing it will run you the same risk as doing so from a computer.  The only way to recover from that is to error check or defragment the drive.  Otherwise, you'll need data recovery software to repair the partition.
