WD photo app enhancement to support private shares

Status: New
by on ‎04-14-2013 05:40 PM

Hi,

I'll post this on the ideas page, but would be interesting to see how many others think this is a good idea (thus getting WD to think its a good idea).

Background.  I've been using "Public" folder on my My Duo Live to share all my Home videos, Movies, Photos, Music etc...  I've grown increasingly uncomfortable with this, as anyone who can gain access to my home network, can effectively delete all the information with no passwords required.  Basically anonymous users have full write access in that share and there is no way to change it.  This could be a guest with their teenage children which stays at our house, and uses the wifi network (which is passworded) and browses around the place and gets up to mischievous.  Or it could be family members who make a mistake etc...  Or it could be a virus on a laptop/PC which looks around the network for things to corrupt/destroy.  Various scenarios could be used.

So, I've moved all our photos etc... to a private share.  This works great, and my WD TV live supports this fine, as does WD 2go.  The only thing which is an issue is the WD photo app as it only supports the public share.  Other users have complained re this limitation.  Does anyone know if WD is planning address as I would think its an easy enough problem to fix?  As I'm unwilling to go back to using the public share, which basically makes this app useless.

I'm considered doing something with symlinks on the My Duo Live itself, but suspect this will cause other issues.

Comments?

Note, I can really recommend the WD TV live, it really complements the WD my duo live, as it provides all the missing functionality around thumbnails/playlists etc...

Regards

Miles

Hi,

What would make the wd 2go and my book live a truly great personal/small business cloud storage product are the following enhancements:

1. Merge the functionality of wd photos into wd 2go. You don't need two products.

2. Please show thumbnails for photo files.

3. Please provide "tv out"  function support in wd 2go on iPad, iPhone.  This will be fantastic to be able to stream to TV directly,

4. Provide support to play .mpg video files natively in iPad, iPhone and not to pass off to another app as in "open in" menu.  This will bring a lot of the older videos into my book live cloud store, thereby increasing demand for storage, which is good for Western Digital's business.

5. Please provide support to email link to "folders" instead of just files (dropbox style).  This will allow to be able to share whole albums. This should be done by providing link to an URL and not zipped file containers.

6. And lastly (for now), provide the same support on iPad, iPhone that exists on Android devices and wd photos on iPad, that is: expor/upload  local device content to my book live.

Thank you,

Sincerely,

K.V. Sastry

I would like to see the auto-upload feature come to the iPhone. I know it can be done because a few other apps do it. (Dropbox, Google+, Carbonite, etc.)

Make it quicker to Start/Stop Backups

If you have More than One drive/partition to backup, when you choose Catagory Backup, you should be able to Choose Any/All drives to backup, and Then be able to Start them, with One Extra click.

The way it is now, you have to Go to HOME, choose a drive, Click on Backup, Click Start Backup, Click on HOME, Choose the Next drive, Click on Backup, Click Start Backup, Click on HOME, Choose the Next drive.... Etc.

I know that part of SmartWare, is to Leave the Backup running in the Background. But, sometimes, you want to do something More CPU Intensive (game, graphics, CPU hog utility). Maybe you want to be sure the Backup is OFF before you turn the computer off?  Maybe you hope it can do a Quick backup, before you turn it off Again, so, you do Multiple Steps to "Start Backup". Leave it for awhile. Then Multiple Steps (again), to "Stop Backup".

All this should be from One Window.

Also... If you want to be SURE to have your E-mail Folders backed up, there should be a way to FORCE a backup of E-mail files. You KNOW your E-mail program is Closed Down. You Know you want to Back-up NOW, since you are going to have your E-mail program ON ALL day. Then, you want to Shut-down Quickly. You should be able to Close your E-mail program. Open SmartWare. Choose Backup E-mail (catagory) files NOW. Smartware backs them up, at THAT Moment (ALL E-mail files). Of course, giving the option of Stating just Where those E-mail files Are (Program And Data); maybe even what file Extentions they are?

I believe that the Current Smartware version (1.6.4), "waits" to backup E-mail; maybe Once a day??  How does it know When to try? When you are RUSHING to Shut-down, for the day?  Or Re-booting, after a program crash?

*** When does Smartware get a chance to Backup Anti-virus program files?***

Enable SkyGo App

Can the SkyGo app be used on a WD TV Live box?

I've bought one thinking it would but looks like I'm going to take it back.

If not yet available will SkyGo be supported soon and when?

It seems a bit of a no brainer that this device cannot access SkyGo when it can access other media sources like lovefilm and netflix

Come on; hurry up and support it, you'll sell thousands more when kids can access their Sky subscriptions from their bedrooms.

HBO Go

I would like to request that WD consider adding HBO Go to the WDTV Plus device. It seems to be a mature platform that likely a good percentage of WDTV Plus users would appreciate. It seems like the interface is similar to the Netfix app., and could make this a more useful product. I hope that WD has the ability to this and will give it serious consideration.

WD 2go support for WP7 / Windows Phone 7?

Status: New
by on ‎02-04-2012 11:35 AM

The Windows Phone 7.5 (particularly post-Mango) is becoming much more popular and is finally gaining market share. For good reasons...for once, albiet belatedly, MS has put out a quality product that rivals and sometimes even exceeds the Android and iOS competition.

I would very much appreciate a WP7 implementation for WD 2go. To do so now rather than later would be impressively forward-thinking.

TV Out and AirPlay support

WD 2go is a great App!! But it only plays videos on the iOS device. It does not do TV Out or support Airplay.
I want to be able to connect my iPad to the my TV via the 32pin cable with the HDMI adapter, and also use Apple TV and AirPlay to steam videos from my My Book Live Duo.

Lock on WD2GO and WD Photos Apps

Hi, I think it would be a good idea to be able to put a pin lock on the WD2GO and WD Photo apps.

Why do we not have Crackle available for WD tv live?

We have Netflix, we have vids, we have a bunch of other stuff no one uses. I don't know how the licensing works but this seems like a no brainer.

WD Remote Update to Update View

Status: New
by on ‎03-09-2012 03:16 AM

Hi I'm using the WD Remote app on my iphone and its handy having it. The functionality that would improve it greatly would be to be able to browse the WD TV Live on the phone, this wouldn't have to be the same view as on the TV, even a folder structure would be great. Although if you could have the same view this would make a **bleep** of a product.

Friends have expressed interest in the device but one limitation is that you cannot browse the music for example with the TV off. I like using this for movies etc, but being able to have the TV off and control everything from a smartphone would be great, at the moment to play music I want to stream from another room to my stereo, I have to turn the tv on and get it going.. and either leave the tv on.. or turn it on again each time I want to make a change.

WD Photos App Private Folder Access...

Ok, after purchasing my new 'my book live' network drive i have just downloaded the WD photos app only to discover that it will only display photos that are in the shared folder. I would like to see a way for the app to show photos in my private folder.   I would like to see this feature implimented in a future update of the app. I am pretty sure other users would like this feature also.

would like to see the option to play entire albums, genres, or complete collection of music via wd 2 go as at present you can only play one track then go back into folder to select next and a similar thing happens with photos in you only get one at a time so unlike wd photos where you can flick through entire albums in wd2go you again have to go back to main folder to select another photo and i would like to see it work like wdphoto app so you can view all photos from albums in a slide mode

WD 2 Go Pro App Update

Status: New
by on ‎06-16-2012 06:27 AM
I feel that ideally the most advanced version of the WD2Go app for our mobile devices should have two main functions: 1) It should allow functionability and access to everything on our WD Network Drives as if they were the HD for our devices themselves, i.e. we could do anything with the media and files on the drive that we could do with the media and files that are on our device's hard drives. We should be able to access, view, play, edit, etc. any file on our WD drive that we could with our device per the apps we have on our devices. (including saving pictures to camera roll for iOS devices). A video player that allows normally incompatible video types to play on our device like some third party apps that are already available should be incorporated into the WD2Go app as well IMO. 2) Transfer of media and files from our devices to our WD Network Drives in app. The same way we can transfer photos and video to our drive from our camera roll (on an iPad) with the WD Photos app we should be able to transfer any media and files on our device or "sync" any such thing to our WD drive wirelessly from anywhere we have an Internet connection. Perhaps with iOS devices a wireless iTunes syncing capability should be made available for our WD network drives, perhaps requiring both an app and firmware update. These two features should be implemented in a single app as an update to the current Wd2Go Pro application.

ipad app feature for Mybook Live

Please consider an app or an enhancement to an existing app to make it easy for users to turn off their mybook live from an ipad or android when on a home network.     I am usually using the NAS with my ipad and would like an easy way to shut it down when not in use.

WD Music app?

WD2Go give us access to our files but in a similar way that WD Photos gives you extra functionality and usability for our photos I would love to see a WD Music app. The ability to be able to random/shuffle music from the entire music folder, create play lists or play specific artists/bands. It would be superb to able to turn my phone into a music jukebox using the MyBookLiveDuo!!

WD for iPhone

Hi, I've bought ShareSpace & am very disappointed to learn :smileysad: that I'm not able to access MioNet on my iPhone due to Java & that only WD Photo app is available on iPhone. Hence, I would like to suggest that WD develop an all-in-one app for iPhone :manvery-happy: instead of only Photo. This new app should be similar to QNap's iphone app - accessable to view photos, watch videos, play music & access data/files/documents from the NAS. Looking forward for such app soon! Thanks! :robothappy:

Universal automatic diagnostics software for both external an internal WD drives.

Status: New
by ‎05-11-2011 07:26 PM - edited ‎05-16-2011 05:00 PM

I think that WD and its customers would benefit from a Unified automatic diagnostics tool running in the background and constantly checking and reporting back to the user the status of the drives in real time. Take an anti-virus as an example as it keeps scanning the computer and pops-up an alert if a threat is found.

Why? Because not everyone has the time, basic knowledge and software required to test a drive for errors, faults and overall health. Since you (WD) deal with a considerable amount of Customers that are not computer literate and don't know how to backup their files, it's best to note that such a tool would Decrease the volume of people who lose data because of not knowing or having an idea of overall drive health. If they are warned in time, then they could take the data out if they don't have a backup.

Additionally, having separate tools that are drive-specific does not help us customers. DLG does not work with most Smartware drives and when Smartware doesn't want to work then the customer is forced to look for other software since there are no more options from WD. Also, most casual consumers (You know it's a high number, just look here on the forums) would  not know how to run the test on their own, that's why it has be automatic and unified for internal and external drives. Make it a default tool, it could be useful for your Tech Support agents as well if it's accurate.

And lastly, the tool needs be user friendly while being able to provide support on its own. It needs to be able to identify and Differentiate between hardware problems and logical (firmware) problems to give the user an idea of what's wrong with the drive. For example, some times the drive's partition does not mount in Windows, not even on disk management and can't be used at all, yet, the drive tends to be listed on -device manager- on Windows when this happens. Letting the user know why this is happening (Or if could have been prevented) will prevent a lot of headaches in the future.

And lastly, the tool needs to translate the testing attributes in a way that even no-brainer would understand. Showing what are the test parameters and giving an "Estimated usable life expectancy" based on the tests that it's always checking and telling the user.

It doesn't have to be a new software, you could just improve DLG to add these features and of course, avoid the same software bloat problem that Smartware has. I understand that a software that runs in the background takes resources out, by my anti-virus NEVER peaks above 10% of CPU usage, so there's no excuse for bloating here... Specially since this software won't be copying files.

A big lot of consumers take your slogan "Put your life on it" quite literally, why not helping them keep their lives safe? What do you think?
