Need to reboot to access passport drive, otherwise pc hangs

Hi, I'm hoping someone can help me with my WD drive.

I'm using xp sp3 with a 1TB USB 2.0 Passport Essentials SE drive (wdbabm0010bbk) which is password protected. I have noticed that if my pc is on for long enough and I connect my wd drive to it, I can easy enough access the smartware unlock software. However after entering in the password, my computer goes into a freeze state. Upon reboot I don't seem to have an issue accessing the drive.

What's strange is that I only recently freshly installed xp sp3. I don't have any issues with my other WD passport essential drives, however they are usb2/3 and don't have password protection. My pc only has usb 2 capabilities.

Would anyone know what the issue might be?

Any help appreciated.

Try removing the password protection.  You can also run a diagnostic to your drive: http://wdc.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/940/session/L3RpbWUvMTMyODk2OTUwOC9zaWQvdXI4YVVxUWs%...

Re: Need to reboot to access passport drive, otherwise pc hangs

Thanks for the response. I disabled password protection and utilised the diagnostics you mentioned. Running both the quick (5min) and extended (~8-9hrs) test gave back PASS on both smart status and test result. So thats OK.

Is this the proper diagnostics to use? It seems like its meant for the "My Book Studio Edition"?

The only other thing I've noticed is that ESET smart security brings up a "User rules file contains invalid data" in my system tray balloon area at around the time I enter in the password. I might have to investigate this further on the ESET forum.

Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Solved it by going back to ESS 4.x
