I would just like to use my passport to store my iTunes library, and for playing iTunes from portable drive. Is that something that can be done on these things, or are they for backing up files only?

First make sure you have copies of what is on the drive. Personally I wouldn't use one of the drives like that since they are simply air cooled no fan. My feeling is they are intended for intermittent use not steady use.
