Delete default folders

Hi all,

How can I get rid of those default folders as our office don't need those, the default folders that I'm talking about are those "Documents", "Pictures", "Music", "Recorded TV" and "Videos" folder. We have our own folder template to organize our files on the server and we don't wan't those default folders as sometimes it confused our employees, like sometimes they put the files on "Documents" folder when it should not be placed in their.

hoping for a quick reply,

Re: Delete default folders

Okay I found it, I deleted those folders by connecting to the server via remote desktop then went to its drive D: and manually delete those folders, the server then notifies me that those folders were missing, I just have to ignore that notification.

Re: Delete default folders

Just so you know.  Those were actually default system folders.  There is no telling what the effects could be.  We've never tested for those being removed.  You could have just switched the permissions on those to be no access for everyone, and nobody could have even opened them.  You may get more errors because of this.  The only way to restore those is to do a full system restore.  But that would destroy all the data too.  Hopefully, you won't have any other issues.

Re: Delete default folders

I can't accept that you guys would create a product that you market directly as a business device, load it with default folders best suited for home users (Recorded TV), and allow no way to "safely" remove them. Surely there is a more proper solution for this that would not warrant warnings about potential problems and the need to perform a system restore...

Re: Delete default folders

These default folders are part of Windows Storage Server 2008 R2.  Since WD is licensing the OS as OEM, they are bound to deliver them to the end users per Microsoft licensing agreement.  You can delete the shares, or the folders, or both.  It may affect the media streaming functionality but in a business environment, you probably do not care about streaming.  You also do not need to restore the system to get them back.  Through the dashboard under Server Folders and Hard Drives, select the Server Folders tab.  For any missing shares, a link on the right will be available to recreate any missing shares.  The recreation will reapply all the appropriate access control.
