Smartware window randomly pops up on screen

The MyBook drive is connected via a 4-way USB hub to my Win7 laptop.  The Smartware icon is on my taskbar.  Randomly the Smartware window pops up full screen.  I wonder if this is most likely due to a USB connection break, a power supply (to the WD) break, or some updating the software is trying to do?

Also sometimes when I start up I get a message that the Ext drive needs to be formatted before it can be used.  But it shows up normally in windows explorer and seems to be fine.

Try connecting wothout the hub and see if the problem percists.
