can't safely remove WD /can't open files

[ Edited ]

Hi everybody, I would like to ask anybody to help me with following problems:

1, I can't switch off my wd from notebook. If I click on "safely remove my passport essential" it says me that "the device my passport essential USB hdd could not be removed. Please close all running programs and try again later."  I can hear that WD is running, but I do not run any program on my PC.

2. I can't delete or open some files on WD drive. It says me that the access to certain file is denied.

Can anybody help me? Thanks

You have some kind of software (or malware) accessing files on the drive. You will need to determine what the software is and shut it down. Usual culprits are anti-virus, anti-spyware, and backup softwares.

Do you have Smartware installed? That might be part of the problem or antivirus. If you just copied a large file it may still be writing also.

I've had this happen a couple times on other drives. Try opening any small file on the drive then closing it. Sometimes I think Windows gets a brain fart and forgets what it's doing that or it interupts the AV or what ever else is  running..
