Fastest way to transfer files from computer onto Hub?

[ Edited ]

Hello Guys...

I just got my WD TV Live Hub unit...I have a lot of movie files on my computer's HD that I want to copy onto the Hub's HD.

What is the best and fastest way to do so? I'm getting speeds of around 3-8 Mbps when copying through explorer! (most of the time it's around 5 Mbps!) It'll take ages to fill that terrabyte!

PS: The files are between 700 mb and 1.4 GB each.

Thanks!

Re: Best/fastest way to transfer files from my computer onto Hub?

In my experience you are unfortunately stuck with that speed.. :smileywink:

No matter what method of copy..

Not sure what the slowdown is. But....... If I had implemented such as the Hub, I would be very sure to leave capacity to play movies without video/sound stuttering while new content is being copied in. Hence maybe they are limiting the file update speed? I don't know. Showing content is after all its primary function..

I myself have an automated sync process making changes to the hub as per  whatever changes I make on my primary content shares.  Yes, it takes AGES, days, ... to move in data. (I have currently around 3 TB held by the Hub).. I just let it run its slow course and watch a movie (or 10) while its doing its thing.

Is that Mbps or should it be MB/s? I ask because mine is at 10MB/s. My WD TV Live Hub and PC are both wired to a gigabit router. What's your setup?

I have the same problem I only get 7 mbps speeds which is unaceptable and takes day to transfer movies. It is not ideal if I want to watch a movie right away. Is there going to be any solution to this?

Re: Fastest way to transfer files from computer onto Hub?

If  your ethernet network is working properly at 100Mb/s that works out to about 10 MB/s. A 700 MB file would then take about 70 to 80 seconds to copy (assuming no other thing showing the net down, overhead, computer busy, etc).

But if you have a poor connection, configuration, router or cable in your network at any point then it all might default back to the old original ethernet 10 Mb/s (1 MB/s) speed. Then it would take over 700 seconds to transfer the movie. Ouch.

If you have a wireless hop in the network that is stuck or configured at the old 802.11b (instead of G or N) configuration that would limit you to 11Mb/s (about 1MB/sec) giving the same bad 700 seconds to transfer the file.

So stop-watch the time to transfer one 700 MB-ish file. If it goes in a couple of minutes you are ok at 100Mb/s. If it takes 12 minutes+  for that file then start troubleshooting your net to find the choke point. If it goes in 15 seconds then you are fully smokin' giggabit.

Re: Fastest way to transfer files from computer onto Hub?

When i initially got my Live Hub.. I had over 500GB in movies.. and when i started network transfer.. it told me it would take almost 48 HOURS to copy!!

SOOO... what i did was i took the top off the Live Hub (unsnaps - no tools needed) ... and removed the hard drive... I then connected the hard drive directly to my computer (SATA connection) and copied all the files that way... All the files took about an hour to copy :smileyhappy:

Re: Fastest way to transfer files from computer onto Hub?

on my G-wifi-network setup I get speeds of around 1 MB/s, normally slightly less. The fastest way i've done it, is copying the files onto an external harddrive, then hook it up to the HUB.

The catch is, although much better speed (still less than USB 2.0 standard speeds), you can't use the HUB while copying.

I find that this is good for your initial transfer of bulk-files, but later when you just wanna copy one or two movie-files at a time, I usually just do it over the network. Yes, it is slow - but who cares, it can run over night for what I care - at least you can use the HUB meanwhile... and ... if you want to watch a file straight away, you can always stream it...

Re: Fastest way to transfer files from computer onto Hub?

Might not like it, but easiest way I found was a 500gb Passport drive.

Connect to PC, copy files

Connect to front USB on Hub, and MOVE files from drive.

Not perfect, but faster than over the network by quite a bit.

Re: Fastest way to transfer files from computer onto Hub?

Hey Guys... Great discussion, just the topic I needed to post in!

Are any of you guys transferring files between Hub and PC using a Powerline adapter and if so what speeds are you getting?  I'm using Neatgear PowerLine equipment, on average I get around between 2.5-4.5 MB/second when transferring files @about 4.5GB up to 25GB. Is this speed normal or should it be higher?
