I agree: This absolutely wonderful solution to audio leveling of music files should most definitely be implemented. Thank you for your consideration.

Additional Comment:

ReplayGain is tag-based method for limiting the playback volume of MP3's.

Great benefits include:

  • It's free
  • Does not change the music data (wave form) itself
  • Listen to your entire MP3 collection without having to constantly adjust the volume.
  • Volume levels can be selected on a track by track basis or album by album.
  • It's free :smileyhappy:

Search on Google or Wikipedia for ReplayGain.

Getting your MP3's to work with ReplayGain is easy:

  1. Start with a media player that supports ReplayGain (such as the free foobar2000 and the free ReplayGain add-in)
  2. Select the files or library to scan
  3. Start the ReplayGain addin.
  4. Depending on how many songs being scanned and how fast your processor is, it could take a little time.  I processed my entire library (over 12,000 MP3's) overnight on a very outdated PC (a 2.8GHz Pentium 4 with 2 GB RAM running Windows XP for crying out loud).
  5. Tags are added to the music files that media players compatible with Replay Gain read and use to adjust the playback volume.
  6. Play back your MP3's with ReplayGain enabled on your media player.  I carry my MP3 music archive to work on a portable hard drive with foobar2000 (which is also a portable app) on it.  I can play music at my work station all day at the office and never have to worry about my music getting loud when I'm not there.  It would be nice if WD added ReplayGain to their products to allow for the same functionality.

Thank you for your consideration.

P.S. On a related note, has anyone found the dynamic range compression provided in the Setup Tab to have any effect?  I have not found it useful for listening to music.
