Cannot see WDTVLIVE from Windows 7 PC Network.

Hi.

I have setup my WDTVLIVE with static IP address (192.168.100.72) and it can access the Internet successfully (no problems with "Check connection", passes all testing successfully). Then, I am trying to see the WDTVLIVE from my Windows 7 PC into the Network. Unfortunately I can never see it there.

Please note that I have configured same Workgroup names both at PC and WDTVLIVE (KOSTAS_NET). Also, I have temporarily disabled the Firewall to see if that was the problem, but still no luck.

As a result of the above, of course, I cannot see the Windows 7 PC from the WDTVLIVE. I am sharing a folder at PC (Movies) for Everyone (and Administrators and Kostas, etc.) and I have also setup this folder (and all subfolders) to be included at the Windows Video Media library.

Then, I tried to access the Video Media Library (setup to be the Movies folder at my Windows 7 PC), but nothing happens, i.e. the WDTVLIVE cannot "see" any Media server.

My intension (goal), as you can understand, is that, in the end, I want to be able to see, from my WDTVLIVE, the Windows 7 PC Movies folder, so that I can select any MKV there (or other video file) for playback, using the WDTVLIVE, directly from my Windows 7 PC.

Can you help me with the above? I am desperate. Thank you!

Have you tried re-booting the Win7 PC?

Re: Cannot see WDTVLIVE from Windows 7 PC Network.

This is kinda brute force, but it might help.

Change your WORKGROUP name on both the WD and your PC to something simple (without the underscore?)

It appears that sometimes the WD boxes (all of them) will ignore certain elements of networking if there are special characters.  I know for a fact, for example, if a share folder has a "#" symbol in it, the Hub will ignore it.

Re: Cannot see WDTVLIVE from Windows 7 PC Network.

I just setup mine the other day. If you have another PC to check if it can see/access the PC in question that would help. Other than that try the following;

1. Open network and sharing center (network icon on the taskbar, left click) or you can find it in Control Panel

2. Change advanced sharing setting (left side bar)

3. Check the following settings;

- Network discovery = Turn on network discovery

- File and printer sharing = Turn on . . .

Might be a good idea to check that your PC is also on 192.168.100.X. If it is not, change the hub to be on the same range.

That should be good to check. The next thing is the folder / drive you are sharing;

1. Right click the folder / drive and go properties

2. Security tab and check for Everyon, add if not there (that was a login issue before I got the Hub and took for ever to find)

Re: Cannot see WDTVLIVE from Windows 7 PC Network.

I have been able to see and access 4 different WDTV Hubs from my desktop (Win 7 64) and my laptop (Win 7 32) for 6 months now, so I suspect it is something in your network setup rather than in the Hub. As another poster said, the workgroup names must be the same

Try this: Go into Network and Sharing center on your PC. Click on "see full map." If the Hub is there, then you have a mapping problem. If it is not there, then I suspect your workgroup names don't agree between the Hub and the PC.

Win 7 sometimes has trouble keep network shares connected. I use a utility "Network Drive Manager" that monitors connected shares and keeps them "alive."

There is another utility "Network Magic" that I have used in the past. However, the latest release is buggy and slows down access to other mapped drives to a crawl. No longer supported by Cisco, either, from what I read. But it is useful to see what is connected to your network via a detailed map that shows IP addresses, etc.
