New Idea

I know a lot of people chosen D-Link Boxee despite of higher price because of more content available easily in Germany. I am still fighting which one WD TV Live or Boxee I shall buy. Is that technically possible for WD programmers and soon to be implemented? How about MyVideo beside YouTube?

Thanks from Germany

Full Menu support of BluRay or DVD disc

Status: Unplanned
by gotcory on 12-03-2009 04:13 AM - last edited on 06-10-2010 02:54 PM by Community Manager Community Manager

One thing I thought was lacking is full menu support for directory backups of a DVD or BluRay (or .ISO files).

Shouldn't they just should be able to load the original disc's menu, just as if you were using the hard media?

While complete backups of BluRay would take more space than .mkv and may not be as convenient as handling a single file (you would have to handle a folder with all the disc's contents in subfolders), I think it would be far superior to preserve all the quality, features and experience of having the disc at your fingertips without having to handle disc media.

And since it is more storange intensive, WD can sell more/bigger drives.  Win-Win!

Status: Unplanned

I only changed this to unplanned because, as Guy says above, BluRay navigation is not possible due to hardware limitations.

IDEA: Better navigation IN files

Status: In Review
by on 12-02-2009 08:20 PM

I strongly feel this is one of the most needed fixes you could add to the firmware: better FF/REW in files.

Lets face it, your current implementation is woefully bad.

In Avi files if I press rewind, it often jumps several seconds FORWARDS before it slowly, very slowly starts to move backwards, even if I crank it up to x16 speed, it still moves slowly.

Where as if you play an ISO, I just have to touch the remote button ever so slightly and it rewinds several minutes even if its at speed 1 !

I know you have prev and next to 10 minutes, but that's far too much if you just want to have a sentence repeated (or for those who playback what they have recorded, its too much to skip commercials).

So I suggest an optional system to jump back and forth in media of duration (ie, also for sound files - if you are listening to a 60 minute podcast it takes forever to get to the exciting point near the end :smileywink:

If people wish to use this system, they can enable the arrow keys on the remote to work in the following way:

The arrow keys have certain jump intervals which works when you are playing the movie and the info bar is NOT visible.

If the info bar IS visible, they have another set of jump intervals.

Ie:

If you are just playing the video (and the info bar is NOT visible) the arrow keys skip this way:

RIGHT ARROW: Jumps forward 10 seconds
LEFT ARROW: Jumps back 10 seconds (for the - what did he say - moments)

UP ARROW: Jumps forward 30 seconds
DOWN ARROW: Jumps back 30 seconds. (for the - I'm not watching that commercial! Moments)

IF you are showing the info bar (either from having pressed the ENTER key or, via the PAUSE key) the arrow keys skip this way:

RIGHT ARROW: Jumps forward 10 minutes
LEFT ARROW: Jumps back 10 minutes

UP ARROW: Jumps forward 30 minutes
DOWN ARROW: Jumps back 30 minutes

Time amounts could (ie 10 seconds etc) could be set via the options.

We are looking into this request. We may consider implementing video jump feature that allows user to jump to a specific time.

Phote Info Bar Enhancements (3)

Status: New
by rwegen on 05-18-2011 12:12 PM

Photo's "Picture Information Panel" ie., "Info Bar" Recommendations

1.  Starting from the left side of the "Info Bar" the "Progress Bar" takes up 45% of the available horizontal space.  Next, the "File Name" takes 23% of the space and only displays 22 characters before going into a scroll mode for longer file names, but never showing all of a very long file name. Last, the image’s sequence number and the total number of image files in the current photo folder takes 11% of the space.  Also, underneath the "File Name" is the file's created date, image resolution and file size.  The recommendations are to:
1) Eliminate the Progress Bar and use the space to enlarge the file name, keeping the scrolling capability for extremely large file names.
2) To the right of the image’s sequence number and the total number of image files in the current photo folder show the % complete.  For example, 16/35 46%.  This is a better progress indicator than the "Progress Bar".

2.  Maximize the amount of the photo clearly displayed vertically.  If the following recommendations are made 95% of the photo will be clearly displayed instead of 78%.  The recommendations are to:
1) Eliminate the file's created date, image resolution and file size located under the "File Name".  This information is not necessary for a slide show.
2) Eliminate the Info Bar's opaqueness which accounts for 15% of the available vertical display space.
3) Move the Info Bar to the very bottom of the screen.  Currently, the available space under the opaque Info Bar accounts for 7% of the available vertical display space.

3.  Put the Info Bar option under exclusive control of the user.  Currently, the Info Bar is turned off by the firmware after a new folder is started The recommendations is to:
1)  Let the user toggle the Info Bar option on or off.  Do not permit the firmware to change the Info Bar option set by the user at any time, including a new power on session.

Get movie information from IMDB

What about adding IMDB movie information? If the folder structure on the attached disks/network disks confirms to IMDB movie name standards, go grab the movie info, movie thumbnails etc.

Thanks for all the input. We do not plan to support IMDB.

Amazon Prime Streaming Support!

Status: New
by RightousNixon on 09-28-2011 01:54 PM

I wrote an email to Western Digtal asking if there were any plans to add Amazons Streaming service to WDTV. They suggested I come here and put the question/idea in this forum. In case your unaware, Amazon now has a streaming service that is free for all Amazon Prime members. Amazon just signed a deal with Fox to add a significant number of TV shows and movies to the already impressive catalog of titles avalable. You currently have to have a Tivo Player or Blu Ray Player to get this streaming to your HDTV. Unfortunatly I dont own either of those devices so I can only access this service through my computer. I have WDTV's hooked up to all 4 HDTV's in my house and adding this service would be amazing.

If your not planning on adding this functionality then I will probably just buy a Blu Ray player but I dont want to buy one if I dony have too. So any plans on adding this functionality un the near future? Any info ould be greatly appreciated.

The only thing missing on your WD TV LIVE to get my 5 stars would be adding the Internet Service Tou.tv.

It's a french canadian streaming TV episode. It's an App for iPad, iPhone, it should be very easy to add it on your services.

Thanks in advance

Auto detect frame rate (24/60 etc.)

Status: Implemented
by rungabic on 12-02-2009 10:42 PM

The "Auto" menu selection at the top of the list of HDMI resolutions apparently either doesn't work or else ignores frame rate.

It's ESSENTIAL that the WD Live be able to detect a file's frame rate and auto switch to that.  I'd like this particularly for .m2ts files, but it would be useful for all files.

At a bare minimum, we should be able to see the frame rate of the currently playing file and then have an easier way of manually matching it (the current method of delving deep into the menus is ridiculous).

In any event, if standalone Blu Ray players can auto switch from 23.976 and 60, why in the world can't the WD Live?

Status: Implemented
This feature is now implemented in the WD TV Live, Live Plus, and Live Hub.

I would like to simply enter (and save) the URL's of my favourite internet radio streams.

Status: Unplanned
Thanks for all the inputs. We are unable to support general Internet radio feeds with this hardware platform. We can only look to support Internet radios which are API Based.

Movie Sheets

Status: New
by on 12-08-2010 09:45 AM - last edited on 12-08-2010 12:10 PM

I would like to compliment WD on the 1.04.10 fw release.  It is much appreciated.

I would also like to suggest the implementation of movie sheets using something similar to what Thumbgen generates.  One possible implementation could be to have one row of thumbnails, similar to thumbnail mode now, scroll across the bottom of the screen while displaying the movie sheet for the highlighted movie above and around the movie thumbs.  Something similar to the implementation here would be nice.

Thanks.

"Marked as Watched" function for WDTVlive

Status: Unplanned
by eM-82 on 12-01-2009 06:34 AM

It would be awesome if the WDTVLive could mark (with a little green eye icon maybe) a movie which is already watched.

example: after 3 minutes of continuous playing it could marked as watched video

Lot of people have lot of series, and it could help us to where could we continue the show (which episode)?

Status: Unplanned
Thanks for your suggestion. Unfortunately, we are unable to include this function in the Live/Live Plus UI.

USB Hubs

Status: Acknowledged
by csharp_windev on 12-26-2009 06:53 AM

Add support for USB Hubs so we can connect more than 2 external hard drives.

Status: Acknowledged
This is on the to-do list. Thanks for your patience.

Please! in your next firmware update, add the option to hide or disable that information box that shows up in upper left corner at the beginning of every video play!!!

It's useless and VERY ANNOYING  for those who like seamless video play!!!!

thanks!

USB Keyboard Support

by Lonnie on 12-06-2009 05:51 PM

It would be quite nice to be able to use a keyboard for entering usernames, password and for searching.

This has been implemented in the latest firmware for the WDTV Live.

NETFLIX streaming support

Status: Implemented
by on 12-02-2009 09:29 AM

Support for instant play streaming of movies from Netflix.

Status: Implemented
Supporting Netflix is not possible in the WDTV Live due to hardware limitations related to DRM. However, Netflix is supported in the WDTV Live Plus (in the US only).

- Optional background for subtitles like KmPlayer does.

We will look to see what kind of enhancement we can do. Thanks.

I love using my wd tv at night when going to bed and find that often I will fall asleep while watching the movie. I think that there should be a sleep timer for the wd tv. Would be very convenient.

Would it possible to be able to enter the time (minutes & seconds) into a film and jump to that position rather than use the fast forward and rewind options.

Hello Western Digital !

A couple of ideas to carrying out product development longer!

What is missing and would be important!

The making of the media collection the automaton could be manual beside a function, because the reprimand of the very much music is long time, like this HDD truth constant storage would be better!

Many people fall asleep beside the apparatus, like what me, too and switching off the full deficiency of timing disturbing! (shutdown timer 30,60,90, 120,180,240,360 )

Jumping ahead, back in the video is missing! (30s, 60s, 120s, 180s, 240s)
What there could be yet!
