IDEA: Better navigation IN files

Status: In Review
by on 12-02-2009 08:20 PM

I strongly feel this is one of the most needed fixes you could add to the firmware: better FF/REW in files.

Lets face it, your current implementation is woefully bad.

In Avi files if I press rewind, it often jumps several seconds FORWARDS before it slowly, very slowly starts to move backwards, even if I crank it up to x16 speed, it still moves slowly.

Where as if you play an ISO, I just have to touch the remote button ever so slightly and it rewinds several minutes even if its at speed 1 !

I know you have prev and next to 10 minutes, but that's far too much if you just want to have a sentence repeated (or for those who playback what they have recorded, its too much to skip commercials).

So I suggest an optional system to jump back and forth in media of duration (ie, also for sound files - if you are listening to a 60 minute podcast it takes forever to get to the exciting point near the end :smileywink:

If people wish to use this system, they can enable the arrow keys on the remote to work in the following way:

The arrow keys have certain jump intervals which works when you are playing the movie and the info bar is NOT visible.

If the info bar IS visible, they have another set of jump intervals.

Ie:

If you are just playing the video (and the info bar is NOT visible) the arrow keys skip this way:

RIGHT ARROW: Jumps forward 10 seconds
LEFT ARROW: Jumps back 10 seconds (for the - what did he say - moments)

UP ARROW: Jumps forward 30 seconds
DOWN ARROW: Jumps back 30 seconds. (for the - I'm not watching that commercial! Moments)

IF you are showing the info bar (either from having pressed the ENTER key or, via the PAUSE key) the arrow keys skip this way:

RIGHT ARROW: Jumps forward 10 minutes
LEFT ARROW: Jumps back 10 minutes

UP ARROW: Jumps forward 30 minutes
DOWN ARROW: Jumps back 30 minutes

Time amounts could (ie 10 seconds etc) could be set via the options.

We are looking into this request. We may consider implementing video jump feature that allows user to jump to a specific time.

- Thicker outlines for subtitles,

- Change the position of the subtitle (vhen playing the movie),

- Change the color of the subtitle,

- Optional background for subtitles like KmPlayer does.

We will look to see what kind of enhancement we can do. Thanks.

An auto shutdown option after X number of minutes of inactivity

Status: In Review

An auto shutdown option after X number of minutes of inactivity. Where the user can select the time period X to suit their needs.

After a recent power cut I noticed my WD Live on for 3 hours with out having been used (because of the way the WD Live comes on automatically when plugged in and likewise after the power comes on after an outage). I'd hate this to happen while I'm away on vacation.

The option should allow for the "auto shutdown" to be enabled/disabled and set the time period from between 1min up to 24 hours (or more?). Basically give the user as much flexibility as possible.

(Or if such large flexibility isn't possible or practicable, at least give an option for : 5 min, 10 min, 15min, 30min. The main point is we need an auto power off option)

UPDATE : If possible  it would be preferable, regarding this feature request,  that the WDTV Live properly 'ejected' the drives before powering off. Thanks

Thanks for your suggestion. I'll add this to our list.

An option to display the bit rate of the currently playing file. Other meta data could be displayed too, like codec being used, audio sample rate, file type  etc.

Thanks for your idea. I'll add this to our list and see what we can do. However, we won't be as detail as MediaInfo.

Integration with Picasa Web Albums

It would be nice to add integration with Picasa Web Albums.

The desired features would be similar to the Flickr integration.

Browsing video in network shares also shows the jpeg images separately (unlike locally attached drives) making them practically useless.  Make the network shares video browsing work exactly the same as local drives (namely: hide the thumbnail jpegs except as standins for the videos)

Status: In Review
We'll see what we can do about this. Because a Network Share drive is not the same as a USB storage, the support is a bit difficult as there are more uncertainties.

BBC iPlayer Support

Status: In Review
by iplayer_fan on 12-14-2009 12:05 PM

BBC iPlayer Support would be an amazing addition to the WD LIve and a much more convienient and economical way of getting the iPlayer on to your TV rather than using an PS3 or similar hardware.

Whilst i'm here, it would also be nice if there was a link to You Tube 'Shows', full length TV shows. At the moment I have no idea how to get to the YouTube shows, even searching for them by name doesn't bring them up.

Thanks.

Configurable Shares for WDTV Live

Status: In Review
by on 12-02-2009 07:20 PM

I'd like to see Configurable Shares I don't want to see all shares why would I want to specify music twice It would be sweet if it worked like XBMC being able to add sources so you see only what you want to see, including which internet based media you want to see or not. Pandora is only available in the US so why should everybody have to see it, be great if you could turn on and off stuff you want or don't want, and as stuff is added people can select which they want maybe even somekind of plugin system for more regional stuff

We'll look into this...

Multichannel FLAC support

Status: In Review
by VMware on 12-06-2009 03:02 AM

Since we will probably never have blu-ray ISO support, due to licenses, the best way to backup your blu-ray collection is to store the main movie in an .MKV container using FLAC as the audio codec.

WDTV1 had this feature (flac in mkv)

It's free, so no licensing cost fees attatched, and it would make a lot of people happy.

A bonus would be to also downmix it to stereo, like with AC3 and DTS and to support it from outside the main movie.

Ex: Main.mkv

      Main.flac

      Main.srt

so we don't have to remux all of our existing movies.

Thanks a lot. We'll look into the files. Does anyone has a sample MKV with flac audio codec as well?

Slideshow screensaver

Having a slideshow as an available screensaver option would certainly beat the WD logo bouncing around.

aspect ratio in playback

Status: In Review
by on 12-10-2009 01:07 AM

the ability to change aspect ratio while playing video would be wonderful , as returning to settings to change every time I play differnet files is full of hassle , WDlive is stronger than wdtv so I think thi is not difficult

OK. We'll see what we can do.

Music playback by genre & artist.

Status: In Review
by FredSoDak on 04-17-2010 06:59 PM

I can playback music by album and it will play all songs of that album... but when I try to playback music by genre or artist it gives me an empty folder message.  Please add the capability to playback music by genre & artist.

Currently I am using playlists created by MediaMonkey and exported to m3u format, then edited in notepad for proper folder positions; a time consuming process whenever new flac files are added.

It seems like it should be a very easy firmware update, since playback by album is already supported... playback by genre & artist please!

Music Albulm Info Download....

The ability to have WD TV Live scan through the music files and pull up albulm info... CD Covers excedra...

Status: In Review
We'll consider this feature for WDTV Live in the future. It is currently unplanned.

Since it's pretty clear that the most recent update causes more issues than it fixes I'd like an option you can mark "yes" or "no" when you turn on the WD and it finds an update available.  It should ask "Show this message again?" and then you can opt out of it if you decide you don't want to upgrade the firmware.

I do believe there is already a menu option to allow you to search for new firmware, so we don't need a constant reminder that we have to bypass every time a new update comes out that we don't want.

Hebrew Supoport in SRT Subtitle

Status: In Review
by RonenT on 04-26-2010 04:40 AM

Can you please enable Hebrew support to SRT subtitles.

FYI, SRT supports Hebrew already,  so I guess you should only include the right coding so Hebrew letters will be shown properly.

Thanks!

Ronen

Believe it or not, we are working on this, and seeking to add it.  It is just taking longer than we anticipated.  We do apologize for the inconvenience.

One idea for futur firmware

Status: In Review
by toonet on 04-21-2010 11:50 AM

Hi,

First, sorry for my english, i'am french ^^

Could you include by the option button, a fonction to change the format of image ( normal or large ) when we see a film ? same as the fonction settings>>audio/video>>image format>>normal/large

why that ? because when you see a divx the format must be set to "normal" to have a good format image, and when you want to see a MKV film, the format must be set to "large" to have a good format image.

it's laborious to go each time to first menu to change it.

thanks a lot :smileyhappy:
