Lion doesn't include a working version of Samba for CFIS shares.

The options appear to be:

  • wait for Apple to re-add Samba support (which may never happen)
  • roll back to Leopard or Snow Leopard
  • use a Media Server instead of Network Shares
  • install/run Samba yourself

Why doesn't WD just release a patch instead... seems like the easiest and most obvious solution.

A patch to what?  To the fact that Lion doesn't support/use Network Shares from Linux?

WD can't make a Mac start properly using CIFS if it doesn't.  All WD could do to fix it would be remove Network Shares.

Exactly how many duplicate threads do we need on this topic, there are at least 4 floating around. Anyhow-

OSX Lion does not include Samba. Apple replaced Samba with their own proprietary implementation of CIFS filesharing which they call SMBX. SMBX is not compatible with many embedded Linux devices that run Samba, one instance being the WDTV Live devices.

You can find out how to install the true Samba on OSX Lion here-http://forums.boxee.tv/showthread.php?t=38629

With some tweaking this should restore the functionality that OSX previously had.

Re: wd live tvhub not working on lion

It doesn't matter what Apple removed. The fact is that it's been that way since the Lion beta, and WD needs to stay on top of these changes. Why wait until hundreds of mac users are pissed off before the issue a fix? It's not that hard to make a device see files on a network. if Apple killed SAMBA then WD needs to issue an update to use whatever method still works, unless they want to leave all their mac customers alienated.

Re: wd live tvhub not working on lion

It MOST CERTAINLY DOES MATTER what Apple removed.

Some facts-

1) Apple removed support for SMB1 protocol in OSX Lion. http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/11/03/23/inside_mac_os_x_10_7_lion_server_apple_replaces_samba_...

2) Apple now only supports SMB2 (which is a quite different implementation of the protocol). Read here- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Server_Message_Block#SMB2

3) The WDTV Live product line uses Samba for SMB file sharing. As do most network media players and NAS devices (which are also broken by this change Apple has made).

4) The version of Samba used in the latest WDTV Live/Live+ firmware is 3.5.1. Easily verified by looking at the GPL code WD has provided. This version has only  EXPERIMENTAL support for SMB2 so it probably is not enabled. See here- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samba_(software)#Recent_history

5) There is no stable version of Samba with full SMB2 support. See again here- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samba_(software)#Recent_history Quote- Version 3.6.0 rc2 was released on 7 June 2011. This is the first branch which include full support for SMB2. Note the release date and release status (rc2).

So what exactly are you expecting WD to do? Start coding their own implementation of SMB2? NOT GOING TO HAPPEN.

Apple broke this and they should fix it.

Have you read that Apple Insider article you linked to? It says Apple removed support for SMB1 because the Samba team moved its code to GPLv3. Having GPLv3 code in a commercial software product such as Lion would cause Apple all kinds of hurt. So they removed the support, instead building an implementation of the new standard introduced by Microsoft in 2007 with Windows Vista. A new standard, btw, that is easier to implement and provides better performance to those who use it.

I think the real question here should be why the Samba team's support for SMB2 is only in an experimental stage FOUR YEARS after that protocol was first released?

In short, WD and Apple customers got screwed over because the Samba team decided to move to a much more restrictive Open Source license than they had previously used. Something to chew on for all those who claim open source software is superior to everything else.

Yes I have read all those links.

I never said Open Source Software is superior. But without Samba you would not have had Windows file sharing from Linux machines or Apple machines. It has been out there and working well for at least 10 years if memory serves correct. Windows still works well with SMB1 or SMB2. Apple decided not to implement SMB1, hence break compatibility with almost all NAS devices and Samba clients out there.

And the GPL3 license is not more restrictive, at least from the end-user perspective. Yes for a vendor it may be. Vendors can no longer use GPL3 software when they do not provide a way for a user to update and/or modify that software on their machine. (Simplistic statement I know, but this is the gist of the problem Apple has with GPL3). Apple decided that  they do not want to allow you to update/modify this software on your machine.

All Apple customers got screwed by this change that they made, go and look through all the other NAS/media player vendors' forums. Almost all vendors are struggling with this problem. And at the same time look at all the problems Apple created with their proprietory AFP protocol and TimeMachine support.

Re: wd live tvhub not working on lion

I'm not making excuses for Apple here. They do what's in their own best interest, as any corporation should. Nor do I want to get into a discussion about the pros and cons of GPLv3. However, you have to wonder why SMB2 is only *experimental* in Samba even though it's been around for four years and appears to be superior to v1 in every way.

For me personally, I'm accessing my WD drive via FTP until there is a firmware update. It works for all I need, so I'm not complaining.
