Firmware 1.09.10 and below

WD TV Live Streaming Media Player with a 3TB USB 3.0 External HDD Connected

I have an external 3TB HDD connected to my WD TV Live SMP and I share this over my local wifi network.

I download my movies on my PC and wirelessly transfer them to the HDD connected to my WD TV Live SMP. Then the WD TV device does its thing and gets content info for the movie etc etc however there seems to be a bug in the firmware which downloads the best rated movie poster OUT OF ANY LANGUAGE on Themoviedb.org. This is obviously un acceptable as I often end up with Deutch, French, German and you name it movie covers for the movies in my library!!!

Some times I can go onto Themoviedb.org and manually vote for the poster I actually want displayed but it is down to chance weather or not I can make the poster the highest voted one. There needs to be an option to select the movie poster you want OR at the very least get the highest voted OF THE SYSTEM LANGUAGE NOT ALL LANGUAGES!!!!!!!

Also I find even if I do manage to vote the proper movie poster on Themoviedb.org, the WD TV seems to have some sort of persistent cache that uses the old foreign thumbnail even tho I have cleared all related .metathumb and .thumbnail files from my movie library and the hidden .wd_tv\thumbs folder etc etc......HOW ANNOYING!!!!!!!

Rather than waste time voting on posters trying to manipulate the poster ratings into the one you want, why don't you just download the poster you like, name it the same as the movie file and transfer it to your external drive.
eg: The Dark Knight (2008).mkv The Dark Knight (2008).jpg
If the movie poster is named the same as the movie file then the WD TV should default to that poster.
Also, the reason why you are getting old movie posters is that your XML files containing the movie metadata are still linking to the old unwanted posters on tmdb.com. So even if you manually delete the .metathumb and .thumbnail files the XML files will still pull them from the tmdb.com site and create new ones.
You need to clear all your old metadata and start again. Go into Setup > System > Media Library and select 'Clear media library'. Then add all your new custom posters before switching on the WD TV and allowing it to compile a fresh media library. Then the next time you transfer a movie to your USB drive also transfer the movie poster.

Hi Ernieflaps, I have tried doing what you say to an extent, I am aware that the backdrops and thumbs are listed in the XML file so after deleting the .metathumbs and .thumnails I was editing the XMLfile with a link to the correct thumbnail however the wd tv still remembered the old thumbnail and overwrites it it some instances. Rebuilding a library of 500 movies and 500 albums is not very practical each time I download a movie that gets a wrong movie cover (which is quite often) so I think that WD really need to fix tje firmware to get english cover titles dor English wd TVs.......

Also why was this moved from issues to ideas? This is an issue wit the firmware not an idea!!!

@HDizzle
The only other thing I can suggest is that you stop using the WDTV's inbuilt content info scraper and use a third party tool like Thumbgen or WDTVHubGen and create your own metadata.

I personally prefer to use Thumbgen. I'm pretty obsessive about having movie posters with no text other than the movie title, and like to tweak the movie descriptions. Thumbgen will let you choose the movie poster and backdrop of your choice and has an automatic function where you can just leave it to scan through your movies and it'll create all the images and xml files for you. Also with Thumbgen you can designate UK or US only sites as sources for movie posters and other data, so you won't get any non-English language posters.

I agree with HDizzle this is an "Issue"

I use the internal scraper on the Hub (FW 2.07.17) and get the same problem..

Most of the time i get a 'Foreign Language' poster and not an English one.

Im guessing this is an issue with the  http://www.themoviedb.org/

WD need to update the tmdb.xml  to remedy this.

I guess that by design the WDTV will look for the most popular cover from Themoviedb.org. What we need is the option to manually select the cover from the WDTV UI or at least select the region from the which the cover will be selected, that would make things a whole lot easier.
