Beta testing of new firmware

Status: New
by on ‎09-02-2011 11:31 AM
I would like to suggest that a new forum be created for the purpose of beta testing new firmware prior to their release to general public. Having beta testing done by members of the community would greatly help reduce the amount of bugs introduce in new firmware and allow for a better quality firmware to be made available to the general public. Making firmware bugs known prior to release would help developers fix them on the spot and avoid issue like firmware installations failure or faulty language files.

Visualizer Screensaver

I would like a visualizer style screensaver. I listen to a lot of Pandora and would love something to look at instead of WD floating around or pictures. The example below is from iTunes and would be on the extreme side. Just something basic to start with would be awesome, then other people might have input.

Support Digital Pass-Through of DTS-HD MA Audio

Status: Unplanned
by ‎01-26-2011 03:22 PM - edited ‎02-24-2011 09:35 AM

<<<  CLICK KUDOS BUTTON TO VOTE!!

Among the popular DVD / BD audio formats, the Live Hub supports:

  • Dolby Digital
  • DD TrueHD
  • DTS (and the DTS 'core' of a DTS-HD track)

Conspicuous by its absence is DTS-HD MA, which is currently the most popular HD audio format (more BDs have DTS-HD than DDTrueHD).

This was a long-standing request for the Live / Live Plus.

However, there's no idea specific for the Hub requesting this.

Please vote for DTD-HD MA Pass-Through support on the Hub and perhaps prove to WD that it's not just a minority of users who want this.

There is no shortage of competing media streamers that are capable of DTS-HD bitstreaming:

  • Netgear NeoTV 550
  • Boxee Box (and Iomega TV?)
  • Popcorn Hour (A-200, A-210, C-200)
  • Xtreamer (Pro, DVD, iXtreamer, Prodigy)
  • A.C.Ryan Fluxx
WD need to cater to the audiophile user or else they'll lose that market.

Hi guys, This is actually a limitation of DTS licensing which digital media player class of products are restricted to support DTS-HD MA. This format is only available for Blu-ray devices to adopt. We will pass on the feedback to DTS so they can consider the growing demand to support this in the future. Thanks!

A Better Audio Player Interface

Status: New
by on ‎05-25-2011 07:52 AM

I am REALLY loving my WD hub, but I am not very happy with how it handles audio files....

I have a large collection of music... and a large collection of audio books.

I'd love it if the Hub would do a <Random Play All> from a selected folder, with the option of playing into subfolders as well...

As it stands now, if I select all, chapters of my audio books get played in with music... Until this gets fixed, or improved I have abandoned playing my music collection via my WD Hub.

Can we get a better audio player interface?  Pretty please with sugar on it???

Enable Proper use of png Tranparencies for Moviesheets, folder icons etc

by ‎05-29-2011 11:21 AM - edited ‎05-30-2011 08:10 AM

Allow the use of Transparent png's for moviesheets , folder icons, thumbnails etc.  Default icons for for absent folder artwork are .png with transparent capability, ie video_browse_gallery_thumbnail_folder_f.png, please allow the use of them for user created work.

Allow the folder.jpg to be a folder.png  with the ability for it to be a tranparent png.

Logical separation in the media library

Status: New
by on ‎03-08-2013 05:23 AM

What I would like to see is the ability to have a top level filter set for pre-defined main menu selections , for example :

Movies / Television / Home Movies

From the root of the file system, anything placed in the Movies folder would only show when selecting Movies from the main menu and so on for the other choices.

I cannot speak for anyone else, but my media library is getting quite large - a problem exasperated by Television series. I accept the UI for what it is due to hardware limitations but using the search feature or manually applying filters is more time consuming than using Page Up/Down.

Trickle style view.

by ‎01-21-2011 11:48 PM - edited ‎03-13-2011 12:24 PM

It would be nice to be able to have a trickle style view like this.

UPDATE:  Even though WD says that this is not possible, you can check this out HERE.   This is a work around, but gives you almost the same effect as the 1st view.  Now if WD would just allow pngs for the Cover Art, to display correctly (right now you have to save pngs, then manually change the extension of the png to jpg for it to show the transparency correctly (?????) I don't understand why this is, and pngs will not show up for "@@poster".  And allow pngs to be displayed as folder icons (with transparency), since right now folder icons will not display transparencies correctly no matter what and pngs will not display as folder icons.

NOW INTRODUCING THE ANODIZED TRICKLE THEME.  Get your Trickle on.

Gallery_trickle5.jpg

And if WD would change the way the gallery scrolls, from Linear to centered continous scrolling.

Thanks for your idea. We love this style as well. Unfortunately, this type of on the fly graphic scaling isn't suitable/capable by the hardware platform that WD TV is running. It simply does not have the graphic engine to handle complicated task like this. And it is correct that it may even slow down the UI performance.

Make firmware modular

Status: New
by on ‎08-30-2011 09:01 AM

Make functions like the games and Internet services separate plug-ins, which could be downloaded separately or at least disabled. The advantage would be that the core firmware would be less complicated and could be made more robust. The core would only need to be updated to fix bugs. New features could be added through a plug-in. This would make development easier and give users more flexibility. You would only download the plug-ins you wanted.

WD TV Live Hub Media Library not complete

Status: Implemented
by on ‎01-18-2011 01:05 PM

The four quotes below, from the Hub User Manual, all give the impression that the Media Library will combine all Media into the appropriate sections regardless of where it is stored. So far I haven't seen anybody who this works for; you have to select the Location you need to see the content stored there. Please make the Media Library work as it should and have it display all similar content no matter where it is stored. I should be able to view the Videos Tab and see all the movies from the Local Drives as well as my Network Share drives in one location.

"Media Library – This unique feature lets you view all your media by media type in one menu regardless of its location in folders or drives. You can view your content by categories such as genre, album, artist and date." - Page 6

"The Music, Videos, and Photos options represent folders for the different media types. Media contents will be displayed either as file/file folders in the media center, network attached storage, or a USB drive directory or as a media library compilation list based on metadata information." - Page 28

"Media Library Compilation refers to the process of scanning and consolidating the media contents of the media center, network attached storage, or an attached USB device into one comprehensive database so that you can easily browse and locate media files based on certain metadata information (e.g., video files are categorized based on title or release date)." - Page 30

"Once the media library compilation process is completed, all available media files are organized under their respective media type directory." - Page 31

Status: Implemented
This has been implemented in the recent firmware. Also added Media library support with NAS storage.

This may be in another suggestion, but if so I couldn't find it. Many of us out there create our own XMLs using ThumbGen or pre-load them with the_roggy's WDLiveMetaDataLoader that he was so kind to share with us. It would be a wonderful addition to the Hub if it would include these XMLs in the Media Library so when a user searches for a genre, actor, directory, etc.,  it includes these files in the search results as well, rather than only displaying files that have info loaded by the "Get Info" tool built into the hub.

Add an option to boot into standby at power on

Status: Acknowledged
by ‎01-08-2011 06:45 AM - edited ‎04-13-2011 12:20 AM

One of the reasons I bought this device was the reputation of the company and the fact that guys from WD listen to consumer community with proper respond.
The device is excellent, but there is one annoying behavior which is really unexpected from a media device of this class.
When the device is plugged in the power grid or when power is restored after power loss, default behavior of the device is: boot up into full operation mode.
This means that device is: loading GUI, starts internal HDD, starts LAN, HDMI, network share and DLNA service etc.
This is totally undesirable behavior from a media device.
For example, imagine your 52inch plasma TV, 7-channel AV receiver (1kW), satellite dish receiver etc. all power on after short power outage. DISASTER!!!
*
These are my ideas:
Add an option(s) in settings:
*
1. Default behavior at power up:
  Values (power states):
  - Stand by (everything down; Logo LED OFF; lowest power consumption) (Default)
  - Media sharing (active: LAN, Internal HDD, USB Ports, Sharing, Media Streaming; Logo LED Flash every 15 seconds)
  - Full power on (Media sharing + GUI and AV outputs; Logo LED ON)
*
(plus nice to haves)
*
Device should trigger power saving event after a certain time of inactivity.
2. Power Save Event Timer (PSE Timer):
  Values:
  - Off
  - 15 minutes
  - 30 minutes
  - 1 hour
  - [or just add an input field for user to enter desired number of minutes]
(plus we could add this countdown to the screen saver, when active)
*
What "power state" should be entered after PSE.
3. PSE Timer Behavior:
  Values:
  - Stand by
  - Media sharing

Interesting comment. Thanks.

The WD live hub fan is not 100% quiet - while it's not much, it's annoying and unexpected especially when the unit is not in use.

This has been a frequent complaint from customers - where some people even added resistors to the fan to make it run a tad slower (and less noisy).

I'm sure the criticism on this fantastic product you read in the forums will change dramatically. I understand there is nothing you can do about the fan noise when there is a fan that needs to run, but there is something you can do to make it much more bearable - and for it to become a non-issue.

A smarter solution to this problem could be "Auto Sleep"

When the WD is in a deep sleep - the fan makes no noise.  The time before the system goes into this sleep could be user configurable (very much like screensavers or sleep-mode is configured on laptops).

the power button for 3 seconds because of the noise from the fan is noticable (in bedrooms, or quiet living rooms). It would make more sense if the unit can decide do that automatically.

The fan would still run as movies are playing, but in that case the sound of the fan will not be noticed when compared to the sound of the movie - so hence this will be seen as a non-issue.

Another smart way of solving this is to "Turn of fan automatically"

Simply put, when the unit is not busy rendering movies, the CPU load of the machine will be small, and the passive cooling capabilities should be acceptable to keep the unit cool enough.

When movies are being rendered (USB, Network, HD), then of course the fan can be on, because the movie will produce a sound which is higher than the fan noise.

You would not need temperature sensors for a machine with this simple logic.  Basically you can say - Turn fan off when it's not operationally used.

Any solution that would improve fan noise would be greatly appreciated - while I find the noise reasonably acceptable, my wife strongly disagrees ...

WDTV App store

Status: New
by on ‎03-20-2012 04:05 AM

Would be really good to have an "App Store" for the services on the WDTV live. Instead of having them all installed as default via the firmware - have the ability to pick what you'd like and install it.

For example - out of all the services installed, I only really use Netflix and iplayer. Having the ability to pick and choose would clean up the interface and allow for it to be controlled by me!

Would be nice to add things like video quality (720p, 1080p, SD), file types (MKV, AVI, etc.) and audio info (5.1, 7.1, AAC, etc.) to each video files description page ala XBMC.

Would be nice to use small icons that stand out to represent these items, but I guess the regular font would do. :smileyhappy:
