Improve network transfer speeds

Status: Unplanned
by ‎03-29-2011 01:31 AM - edited ‎05-22-2011 03:50 AM

Current file transfer speeds are poor. If the lack of the cpu resources is the issue here, is it possible to add ability to boot into new mode dedicated ONLY for transferring files, e.g. "file transfer mode". In this mode we could use ALL cpu and hardware resources only for file transfers. All we need here is SAMBA share without any overhead like media streaming, GUI etc.

Please consider this idea! I believe ALL users would be thrilled with improved transfer speeds.

Unfortunately, this is at the best this platform can do. This is not a traditional NAS.

Support Digital Pass-Through of DTS-HD MA Audio

<<<  CLICK KUDOS BUTTON TO VOTE!!

Among the popular DVD / BD audio formats, the Live Hub supports:

  • Dolby Digital
  • DD TrueHD
  • DTS (and the DTS 'core' of a DTS-HD track)

Conspicuous by its absence is DTS-HD MA, which is currently the most popular HD audio format (more BDs have DTS-HD than DDTrueHD).

This was a long-standing request for the Live / Live Plus.

However, there's no idea specific for the Hub requesting this.

Please vote for DTD-HD MA Pass-Through support on the Hub and perhaps prove to WD that it's not just a minority of users who want this.

There is no shortage of competing media streamers that are capable of DTS-HD bitstreaming:

  • Netgear NeoTV 550
  • Boxee Box (and Iomega TV?)
  • Popcorn Hour (A-200, A-210, C-200)
  • Xtreamer (Pro, DVD, iXtreamer, Prodigy)
  • A.C.Ryan Fluxx
WD need to cater to the audiophile user or else they'll lose that market.

Hi guys, This is actually a limitation of DTS licensing which digital media player class of products are restricted to support DTS-HD MA. This format is only available for Blu-ray devices to adopt. We will pass on the feedback to DTS so they can consider the growing demand to support this in the future. Thanks!

Trickle style view.

by ‎01-21-2011 11:48 PM - edited ‎03-13-2011 12:24 PM

It would be nice to be able to have a trickle style view like this.

UPDATE:  Even though WD says that this is not possible, you can check this out HERE.   This is a work around, but gives you almost the same effect as the 1st view.  Now if WD would just allow pngs for the Cover Art, to display correctly (right now you have to save pngs, then manually change the extension of the png to jpg for it to show the transparency correctly (?????) I don't understand why this is, and pngs will not show up for "@@poster".  And allow pngs to be displayed as folder icons (with transparency), since right now folder icons will not display transparencies correctly no matter what and pngs will not display as folder icons.

NOW INTRODUCING THE ANODIZED TRICKLE THEME.  Get your Trickle on.

Gallery_trickle5.jpg

And if WD would change the way the gallery scrolls, from Linear to centered continous scrolling.

Thanks for your idea. We love this style as well. Unfortunately, this type of on the fly graphic scaling isn't suitable/capable by the hardware platform that WD TV is running. It simply does not have the graphic engine to handle complicated task like this. And it is correct that it may even slow down the UI performance.

IMDB movie rating

Would love the IMDB movie rating to show along with the movie info. Like how many stars or the score from 1 to 10 the movie has gotten from viewers.

Sorry, IMDB database support isn't planned due to licensing requirements with IMDB.

Dear WD Devs,

Would you consider adding visualizations while music playback?

Browser Application

Any Opera like browser will really lift this device to the next level. Imagine If I don't have to turn on my notebook or iPad and just use my TV to browse through stuff or check my email.

Unfortunately, this platform cannot handle a full open browser.

Support for general internet radio streams

Status: Unplanned
by on ‎01-23-2011 11:07 AM

It would be grand if we can add custom internet radio URLs, so everyone of us can listen our favourite radios on WDHub.

Status: Unplanned
Thanks for the input. Unlike PC, it is almost impossible for an embedded device like WDTV to support general internet radio streams as those streams are basically unknown to the player so it wouldn't know what's the best way to handle it. If there is specific services which you are interested are adding (such as Shoutcast), please start a separate idea and we will try to see what we can do.

Include all <GENRE> tags from one xml when filtering the movie by genre

Status: Unplanned
by ‎03-09-2011 11:52 PM - edited ‎03-10-2011 06:06 AM

Hi again,

Most movies belong to several genres at the same time, because they can not be categorized by only one unique genre.

Let's consider the following example:

The 'Dead Man' by Jim Jarmush (http://www.themoviedb.org/movie/922) is determined as Action, Drama, Fantasy, Indie and Western. You may find this movie in TMDb by selecting any of these genres.

This information is also acquired by HUB and kept in the corresponding xml file in several <genre> tags.

Now, the problem is that when you filter movies by genre, the HUB reads only the first <genre> tag from the xml, so the 'Dead Man' is only shown when Action is selected, otherwise the movie does not appear. Moreover, you never get the rest genres in filter list, if they don't come as first tags in other xml files. This is not convenient at all!

To conclude:

Please, review the genre filtering logics; make it possible for the HUB to filter out the movie by any genre it might belong to according to its dedicated xml, thus, read all the <genre> tags, included in that xml.

I hope, the idea is clear.

Hi, Thanks for all of your feedback. At this time, our database structure is designed for 1 data value per genre field. And there is no plan to change this.

Bluetooth Keyboard

Status: Unplanned
by on ‎06-30-2011 08:03 PM

I saw a request for bluetooth headphones. I'd like to be able to use a bluetooth keyboard (apple) so I don't have to use one of the USB ports. If the next generation hub had full connectivity for all bluetooth devices that would be nice.

Status: Unplanned
Only USB bluetooth keyboard is supported. The Live Hub does not have a native Bluetooth interface.

FTP and/or Bittorrent client for WDTV Live Hub

Status: Unplanned
by on ‎10-28-2010 07:03 AM

The combination NAS/Media Streamer is great, I'd go for it if I could get the files to it through Bittorrent and FTP.

Status: Unplanned
High end NAS feature is not planned in the Live Hub as this hardware isn't capable of handling such 24/7 task. Also, BT support is not planned due to copy right issue with the media content owner.

Some new feature

Status: Unplanned
by on ‎01-24-2011 01:38 AM

I think should be nice to have:

  • the possibility to use also the chat feature on facebook
  • a torrent client
  • some other video streaming services (vimeo for example - or (with parental control) youporn)
  • a simple web browser
hope some of this feature will be in new firmware

Status: Unplanned
Thanks for your suggestions. Please remember to break up ideas individually so it can get voted properly. - Chat feature is something we chose not to support with Facebook as this product doesn't have a true input device besides the alphanumeric remote so we didn't think it would be a good use case for this product. If you think strongly about this, please create a separate idea and see how everyone thinks abt it. - Unfortunately, we cannot support torrent or newsbin type of downloading engine as it is in copyright violation against the content owner. Also, a PC based torrent/newsbin downloader will work much better than an embedded device like ours. We support a Network Sync that allows our device to monitor a download folder and auto sync content from there once awhile. - We are looking to get additional video streaming service added to the box. If you have any specific ones you like, please start an idea so user can vote on it. Adult content are not in our list unfortunately. - The WD hardware platform is not capable of truely handling an open web browser that lets user browse to any website.

Convert Multichannel AAC to Multichannel PCM for HDMI Connections

Status: Unplanned
by ‎03-07-2011 09:54 AM - edited ‎03-08-2011 07:40 AM

<<<  CLICK KUDOS BUTTON TO VOTE!!

The recent Hub update brought a welcome change to how it handles AAC 5.1; if your amp supports AAC, the Hub bitstreams; if your amp doesn't support AAC, it converts to stereo PCM.

Previously, it bitstreamed regardless and most people heard silence.

However, it is well within the capabilities of the unit to convert AAC 5.1 to PCM 5.1 on-the-fly.

Please consider adding the option to convert multichannel AAC to multichannel PCM, thereby negating the need to re-encode media distributed with that audio format.

Status: Unplanned
Thanks for the suggestion. This feature is not planned because the WDTV is only licensed for two channel decode similar to a standard DVD player. Additional channel decode requires external audio receiver to handle the task which is also more equipped.

Theme Simulator

Status: Unplanned
by on ‎02-06-2011 05:43 PM

It would be nice to have a Theme Simulator that could be run from a PC to make development and testing themes easier.

Instead of having to make changes to the theme and then go back and forth from a PC to the HUB, you could just make changes then run the theme in the simulator.

Status: Unplanned
Hello, This is great idea and would make the theme development a lot faster. Unfortunately, this is not something we are planning due to priority issue.

At the moment the audio cover art thumbnails are made in the size 240 x 240 pixels.

An increase in size would let me appreciate the beautiful covers of all those albums much much more!

I have a theme working that shows LARGE COVER ART images streamed with songs from another server!

Technical considerations:

As the WD TV Live Hub has a built in 1 TB hard drive, and the fact that cover art images even at a size of eg. 600 x 600 are a lot smaller than the audio files the represent, I don't see the need for small size thumbnails, storage wise.

The limiting factor would rather be the speed with which these images can be streamed over the network, to client players.

I have an iPad, and the cover art I can see on it using a server delivering BIG images, is trulu amazing.

The small (and grainy!) thumbnails the Hub delivers just look hidious in comparison :-(

BTW I believe this is easy to fix, as the thumbnail size seems to be configurated in the Config.in file I found in the GPL package:

config JPEG_THUMBNAIL_MAX_W
            int "Maximum width of thumbnail"
            default 240
        config JPEG_THUMBNAIL_MAX_H
            int "Maximum height of thumbnail"
            default 240
        config MAX_SUPPORTED_PROGRESSIVE_JPEG_SIZE
int "Maximum supported progressive jpeg size for thumbnail. (default :720x480)"
            default 345600
        config MAX_SUPPORTED_THUMBNAIL_PNG_SIZE
int "Maximum supported png size for thumbnail. (default :720x480)"
            default 921600 if PRODUCT_EXT_WDTV_HUT || PRODUCT_EXT_WDTV_VILLA || PRODUCT_EXT_WDTV_RV || PLATFORM_X86
            default 345600
        config MAX_SUPPORTED_THUMBNAIL_GIF_SIZE
int "Maximum supported gif size for thumbnail. (default :720x480)"
            default 345600

Status: Unplanned
At this time, we have no plan to change the thumbnail size in the Mochi UI theme. As Tinwarble mentioned below, there are additional themes designed by our users which can better suite each user's need. Thanks for your suggestion.

Add shortcut for image rotation while in slideshow

Status: Unplanned
by ‎03-07-2011 06:00 AM - edited ‎03-27-2011 05:07 PM

When I want to see my new shots from Digital Camera, in fulscreen mode or slideshow, if there is picture taken in portrait mode I need to press remote button 4 times: options/navigate_to_rotate_option/click_it/click_rotate_90_deg

Life would be much easier if we have a shortcut for this for example by pressing UP/DOWN navigation buttons.

For example press UP (rotate right) and DOWN (rotate left).

Status: Unplanned
We have no plan to support this. The down key conflicts w/ the quick gallery view during photo playback.

Sticky - WD Official

Status: Unplanned
by on ‎10-24-2011 06:40 AM

How about WD posts at the top of this New Idea Exchange all the upcoming features they are working on currently, considering, or rejected - to summarise.

eg: Inbuilt BitTorrent client - rejected, will not be added (even though a huge portion of existing customers want it added, and a huge portion of prospective customers researching their options opt to purchase the Buffalo Media NAS with inbuilt torrent client instead).

eg: Volume Control on WD Remote - even more people are demanding this as a necessity than the torrent client, but as far as I can see their is no official response on this. It is believed to be a relatively simple firmware upgrade, using the up and down button which doesn't do anything when just playing music / video.

WD: Instead of answering every one of the many posts on this (or just ignoring them all), please post a sticky and answer whether: "volume control other than mute is rejected, we're not working on this" / "we did not include it originally because Line Out volume should always be maximised otherwise you degrade the sound quality. eg. Think of your Foxtel remote, so many people turn down the volume on their Foxtel remote, then pick up their TV remote and turn up the volume. Repeat a few times. The audio quality deteriorates dramatically because the Line Out is reduced to a low amplitude, and then magnified. To put it into perspective, take a 10 MB 3840x2160 photograph, reduce it down to 100kb 160x120 to send it by email, then the recipient displays it on their 65" 1920x1080 TV. It will be massively pixellated and the viewer says 'this photo is terrible quality, the camera must be so cheap and nasty'. That is exactly what you're doing when you reduce the Line Out and turn up the volume on the receiver. HOWEVER we acknowledge that many people are not able to remotely control their volume, and so we have timelined volume control to be worked on 3 firmwares from now, likely as an optional activation through the setup menu, requiring the user the read and acknowledge a warning advising them they should keep the Line Out volume as high as possible, minimising the receiver volume" / "we are right on top of this, it is expected to be ready to roll out with the next firmware update".

etc. For the rest of the feature requests, in particular those most "up-arrowed" or "liked" or whatever term you want to use indicating it is a popular request or popular query.

Second to this, it would be brilliant if you could also just have in this sticky or as a second sticky:

An overall future firmware task list.

As in : "WD is currently working on the following features for the next firmware update:

1) Troubleshooting why the supposed Gigabit ethernet controller only communicates at less than 100Mbit speeds;

2) Negotiating with NetFlix to allow Australian Netflix subscribers to use this service;

3) Working on a Refresh option in the Option menu (can be user selectable on a colour button also)

etc.

Thanks! :manhappy:

First of all, the Idea Exchanges don't have the ability to float, or sticky, any single idea. Secondly, no company is going to broadcast their roadmap. Thirdly, there is no sense in creating a task list for firmwares. What you may want done, may not be what the next person wants done, if it can even be done.
