New Issue
-Which firmware? 1.15.10
-What happened? Netflix is simply not working, it takes minutes to start up, navigating content takes forever and movies doesn't start passed browsing.
-What were you doing? Trying to watch Netflix
-Does this happen every time? Yes
-What hardware and media were you using? WD TV LIVE smp 3gen
-Did this happen with previous firmware? No
-Does power cycling the unit solve this? No
-Does resetting to factory defaults solve this? No
-Have you tried this on other devices? Yes, Netflix is working fine on Ps3, Samsung Galaxy sII and computer.

Which firmware? > 1.12.14

What happened?

>  "Content source has been removed" periodically occurs.

What were you doing? > I am able to successfully configure and use my WD TV Live Streaming Media Player to view and play videos stored on my Linksys NAS200 as a "Media Server" content source.  However, after a period of time (hours, perhaps?), the WD TV Live unit loses connectivity to the NAS providing the error message "Content source has been removed" and is unable to find the NAS again.  The only workaround I've found works is to reboot my NAS and wait for the WD TV Live unit to once again find and be able to view and play videos on the NAS as a "Media Server" content source.

Does this happen every time?

>  This happens at least once a day.  It may happen more frequently, but this is as frequently as I've been noticing this.  This has happened ever since I purchased the WD TV Live, about 1 month ago.

What hardware and media were you using?

> There is no problem playing any of the media when this works.  The problem is that the media server periodically dissapears from view from the WD TV Live box.  I do not think this is a problem with my WiFi connection.  The hardware involved is: WD TV Live Streaming Media Player, Linksys NAS200 Network Storage System, and D-Link DIR-615 wireless router.  The NAS200 is configured so that it can be located by compatible media adapters using the UPnP AV standard.

Did this happen with previous firmware?

> I have never tried it with older firmware

Does power cycling the unit solve this?

> Power cycling the NAS200 solves this.  Power cycling the WD TV Live Streaming Media Player does not seem to solve this.

Does resetting to factory defaults solve this?

> No

Have you tried this on other devices?

> This occurs on both WD TV Live Streaming Player units that I own.

Remove Developer Code Pt. III (console_sniffer)

Status: Investigating
by ‎06-22-2012 05:52 AM - edited ‎09-10-2012 01:37 AM

On 2012-02-29 I wrote an email to trademarks@wdc.com and PressRelations@wdc.com but never received a reply so I re-ask the questions here:
(console_sniffer is a program which stores all console input/output to (encrypted) logfiles)

"1. Part of all published firmwares for this device (and the Live Hub) is a script called 'console_upload.sh' which seems to upload encrypted logfiles to the FTP server ftpext2.wdc.com.
Why is Western Digital shipping such a script to consumers ?

2. Included in the afformended script is a username and password combination which allows access to the mentioned FTP server.
At a first glance the ftp server seems to be empty but if one changes to the '/WDTVLiveHub' directory some 80 subdirectories are accessible.
These subdirectories include mostly encrypted logfiles and other files. The creation of files and directories is possible."

It has come to my attention that the console_sniffer + console_upload.sh are still being shipped with the most recent firmware (1.09.10).
The console_sniffer program is running on the wdtv live smp and stores logfiles in /usrdata/app/console.

I urge you to remove this developer code portion from the next firmware release.

My current setup:

-3TB MyBook Essential drive (connected to rear USB port)

-WDTV Live player (latest firmware as of 4/11/2013

Hi... I just got my WDTV live and also updated to the latest firmware but i'm having an issue with a .mkv file i'm trying to play... here is what is happening:

The movie started fine. Then all of a sudden maybe about 13 minutes into the movie, it froze and I saw that the light on my WD MyBook (hard drive) turned off. I tried everything to get the light to come back on but it stayed un-responsive.

To get the hard drive to power back on, I had to connect it back to my computer, at which point it said, that i needed to "scan and fix some errors" which I did. Then, when I re-connected the MyBook back to the WDTV Live player, it started working again and played the movie for another 10 minutes. Then the light went off again and I had to connect the MyBook back to my computer and it said i have to "scan and fix some errors" again...

why does my hard drive keep shutting down and becoming unresponsive??

AVI files shutter and lose sound when played over network share

Status: Resolved
by ‎12-28-2011 12:01 PM - edited ‎05-11-2012 05:44 AM

If you try and play an avi file wireless or wired via a windows network share, the video will get shuttery and you will lose sound.  Seems to only happen with network shares.  Happens almost immediatly after starting the video.  Other higher quality formats such as MKV, MP4, etc work just fine via network share.

Does this on all older firmwares including newest currently available 1.08.17.  Factory reset dosent help.  They play just fine if you use a local attached drive.    Happends everytime on both of my wd tv live smp.  Ive tried about 50 different avi/xvid files now from different sources now hoping one of them may work but none ever have.  Bug that needs to be fixed.  Thanks

TMDB content scraper: wrong metadata for 'director' entry

Status: In Review
by ‎02-14-2013 01:37 AM - edited ‎02-14-2013 09:59 AM

Which firmware: FW: 1.13.18

What happened: Dowloaded content description from themoviedb.org. The 'director' name is wrong IF there is also the director of photography under Crew/Camera listed for the movie. In that case WDTV uses the name of the director of photography instead of the movie director.

Here are some 'popular' examples, together with screenshots from WDTV media library and the corresponding links to themoviedb.org:

Alien (1979), Director: Ridley Scott

WDTV screenshot: tmdb_alien.jpg

The director shown (Derek Vanlint) is actually the director of photography of the camera crew, which can be verified by this

tmdb link: http://www.themoviedb.org/movie/348-alien/cast

Avatar (2009), Director: James Cameron

WDTV screenshot:tmdb_avatar.jpg

Again, the director shown (Chiling Lin) is actually the director of photography of the camera crew, see

tmdb link: http://www.themoviedb.org/movie/19995-avatar/cast

Das Boot (1981), Director: Wolfgang Petersen

WDTV: screenshot: tmdb_boot.jpg

Again, the director shown (Jost Volcano) is actually the director of photography of the camera crew, see

tmdb link: http://www.themoviedb.org/movie/387-das-boot/cast

BUT, if there is no 'other' director in the crew/cast list, the director is displayed correctly:

The Fifth Element (1997), Director: Luc Besson

WDTV screenshot: tmdb_element.jpg

This time, the director name is correct, since there is no entry for the Camera/Director of photography for this movie, see

tmdb link: http://www.themoviedb.org/movie/18-the-fifth-element/cast

What were you doing: used "get content info" option on multiple media files

Does this happen every time: YES

Did this happen with previous firmware: I don't know. Haven't used the media library since august last year (after local language setting for metadata was broken with fw 1.10.13 and beyond).

Does power cycling the unit solve this: NO

Does resetting to factory defaults solve this: NO

Have you tried this on other devices: YES. Actually tested on 3 different devices.

Im using Samsung 1080p

last connection has been removed.

I purchased a WDTV live SMP last week and have had no end of trouble with it and am on the verge of returning it.

When it is working it is great piece of kit, plays everything and can be set up to display a very nice UI.

However getting it to work consistently has proven impossible.  I have it wired to a Win 7 64 bit machine with an internal drive hosting all my media in 4 folders.  I had some trouble initially getting the SMP to find my windows shares and to connect to my folders.  When it finally did (after setting up a WDTV user and password on my host machine) I was able to connect to windows shares and  play everything and got the theme and movie sheets how I like.

However the SMP will NOT hold the connection to the shares for any length of time – twice it has dropped the connection during playback returning a ‘last content source has been removed’ error and then will not find any windows shares always timing out.

The device is now returning ‘last content source has been removed’ error every time it is powered down.  No matter how I connect to the network, with password, without password, as a unique user  as anonymous, as WDTV with a wd password or no password – not matter what I do, once I get it working it will not connect again after it is powered down.

In order to reconnect I have to run a various cycle of clearing network settings, resubmitting workgroup, restarting device, it is never consistent to how many times I need to do this.

Currently I media library turned off, but that has not made any difference it doesn’t work either way.

I have connected an older WDTV Live, PS3, Xbox 360 and a popcorn hour to this network over  the past 6 months as well as a laptop and workstation and have never had any issues with shared folders or accessing media, so it is not the network casing this issue.

Any help would be appreciated or this thing is going back Tuesday.

Hello fellas..

Since I download the last firmware (1.12.14) my device reboots when starting movies. Shows a message: "A fatal system error is detected. The device will restart." That never happen before, never, and after the last firmware that message keeps coming (8 times in 2 days). I don't know what to do anymore.

** My files are just fine, everything worked perfectly before the last firmware; the device reboots with any kind of file (.mkv, .avi, .mp4), random.

MKV files display FIRST SUBTITLE even when default is OFF

Status: Resolved
by ‎08-02-2012 12:48 AM - edited ‎08-02-2012 02:51 AM

-     Which firmware?   1.04.12  until  1.10.13
-     What happened?  When starting MKV files, Subtitles are often turned ON (track 1) even though

my preferences    have subtitles OFF by default.
-     What were you doing?  Tried to watch a movie with subtitles switched off
-     Does this happen every time?   Every time in the first movie being played appeared subtitles.
-     What hardware and media were you using? PC Win 7x32 , router DLink DIR-100, SMP, MKV files.
-     Did this happen with previous firmware?  Yes
-     Does power cycling the unit solve this? No
-     Does resetting to factory defaults solve this?  No
-     Have you tried this on other devices?  Yes,  tried NAS.

When starting MKV files, Subtitles are often turned ON (track 1) even though my preferences

have subtitles OFF by default.
I used to think that the subtitles appear by chance, that is, without any particular sequence.
Therefore, never raised this issue.
It turns out that there is regularity.

How reproducible is the issue:

Start by rebooting the SMP.
Verified Subtitle Default is *OFF*
Went into VIDEOs.
Start any MKV Video that has Subtitles (Mine has VOBSUB subtitles.)
Note that SUBTITLE 1 is ON. <---- It should NOT be.
Start ANOTHER MKV. Note now that Subtitles are OFF.
Go back and RESTART the PREVIOUS one, and now Subtitles are OFF.

It MAY do this only on the first file played after a start-up.

After upgrade to 1.13.18  immediatly i faced out an issue with youtube videos(i talk about the application youtube videos), now the fastforward doesn't work anymore.

In past worked, and goes forward from 30 second to 1.30 second (not so well indeed, i think could be improved and i ask you to optimize this function) but now doesn't work, i've a  real 20 Mbit download and 1 Mbit  upload setted in fast, and i tried the device with three other asdl line with different provider in three different location of my city.

i downgraded to 1.12.14 firmware and all is fixed.

I noticed this problem in 4 wdtv live streaming mediaplayer, from my parents and friends, everyone have upgraded from usb, at exception of one that upgraded from auto internet update. Some one have reset to factor and other no.

Deezer doesn't play music after 1.13.18

Status: In Review
by on ‎03-31-2013 06:45 PM

I am located in Canada and playing music with Deezer (Registered Premium User) works fine in 1.13.18 and prior firmware versions.

Upgraded to latest firmware 1.14.09 (1 month ago). Release notes specified that users must upgrade to latest frimware for continued use of Deezer.  However after upgrade Deezer didn't work at all.  I can log in correctly and attempt to play but no music/sound (and song progression stays at 0:00).

Upgraded to 1.15.10. Same problem. I had hoped this was fixed but it still doesn't work.

Downgrading to 1.13.18 solves problem.  Deezer works correctly.

Same problem on my WD TV Live Hub with latest firmware 3.11.10 and 3.10.09.  Older firmware 3.09.18 works fine.

YouTube Leanback Time Jumping Super Slow

Status: In Review
by on ‎02-01-2013 09:40 PM
  • Which firmware were you using? 1.13.18
  • What exactly happened? Trying to skip (fast forward) in YouTube Leanback
  • What you were doing? One easy way to reproduce this problem is to skip forward on a mobile device (phone), then go to "Play on TV".  Or one can simply try to "fast forward" a few minutes.  YouTube takes crazy times to restart playing (streaming), often losing synch between voice and pictures.
  • What hardware and media were you using? WD TV Live Streaming Player, broadband internet connection
  • Does it happen every time? Yes
  • Does it happen with previous firmware? Probably
  • Does power cycling the unit solve it? No
  • Does resetting to factory defaults solve it? No
  • Have you tried this on other devices? Yes.  Fast forwarding, skipping, scrubbing works just fine on PC, phone, iPad, etc.  But on WD TV it's as if the entire stream needs to be processed before the player can get to the point where it needs to restart playing.  This makes the YouTube practically unusable as there is no way to skip and restart playing from a point where you left off.
Status: In Review

After upgrading to the latest firmware  1.12.14 I can no longer play flac files from a NAS drive (connected to my Assus  RT-N56U router) through my Android tablet or my ipad3 to my  music system via my WDTV device.  I use the apps bubblesoftupnp player on my Android tablet and WDTVMediaHD (Zappotv) on my ipad.  The android tablet reports INVALID ARGUEMENTS error code 402.

Power cycling etc does not solve the problem, which occurs every time I  attempt to play the music.  I can see the WDTV live as a playto device, and I can see all the contents on my NAS drive, but it will not play.

I have rolled back to the previous firmware, 1.11.14, and the setup works perfectly on both tablets, as before.

The firmware upgrde seems to have broken this feature which I have found very useful, enabling me to set up muic playback without having to have my main tv set on.
